Unison members vote for pension strike
https://teakdoor.com/images/imported/2011/11/260.jpg
Members of the Unison trade union have voted in favour of striking against the government's plans to change public service pension schemes.
There was a 78% majority, with 245,358 in favour and 70,253 against on a 29% turnout.
The vote means there is likely to be a huge national strike on 30 November.
On Wednesday, the government offered to change its plans, which are aimed at cutting the cost of funding public service pensions.
However, the changes to its original plans have met with only a lukewarm response from public sector unions.
Unison general secretary Dave Prentis said: "Yesterday's statement in Parliament was a marked improvement on earlier proposals."
"But it is important to understand that the statement has to be translated into offers in the scheme-specific talks.
"We still have had no offer in those negotiations, where such an offer can legitimately be made," he added.
India court denies bail to MP Kanimozhi
https://teakdoor.com/images/imported/2011/05/3956.jpg Ms Kanimozhi is an MP from the DMK party, a key federal government ally
Indian MP Kanimozhi, arrested in May in connection with the country's biggest corruption scandal, has been refused bail by a court in the capital, Delhi.
She denies conspiracy and accepting bribes in the alleged mis-selling of telecoms licences, which auditors say cost the country about $40bn (£24.5bn).
The court also announced that the trial would begin on 11 November.
Ms Kanimozhi, 43, is the daughter of M Karunanidhi, an important ally of the Congress-led federal government.
Former telecoms minister A Raja is also in jail in connection with the scandal.
Mr Raja, a party colleague of Ms Kanimozhi, is accused of selling mobile telephony spectrum to firms at a fraction of their real value in exchange for bribes in 2008.
He too denies all wrongdoing.
Refusing bail to Ms Kanimozhi and seven others, the court said the "crime committed was a deliberate offence, an economic offence and very serious in nature".
Prosecutors say Ms Kanimozhi took a bribe of $47.6m (£29.3m) through Kalaignar TV - a channel run by the DMK party in the southern state of Tamil Nadu.
Last month, the federal Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) charged her on a number of counts, including criminal conspiracy, forgery, accepting bribes and misuse of office.
The issue of corruption has become a major talking point in India.
Mr Raja is on trial along with 16 others, including former civil servants, top company executives and businessmen, who have also been arrested in connection with the so-called 2G case.
Argentina convicts drug beauty queen Angie Sanclemente
https://teakdoor.com/images/imported/2011/11/262.jpg The Argentine press dubbed Ms Sanclemente the "Narco Queen"
A former Colombian beauty queen has been jailed for nearly seven years in Argentina for running an international drug trafficking ring.
Model Angie Sanclemente Valencia, 31, had denied helping her boyfriend recruit other young women to smuggle cocaine to Europe via Mexico.
She said she had come to Argentina to get married, not to smuggle drugs - her only crime was to fall in love.
Her Argentine boyfriend Nicolas Gualco was given the same sentence.
Several other accomplices were also jailed or given suspended sentences.
Throughout the trial Ms Sanclemente insisted she was innocent.
She said she had come to Argentina to marry Mr Gualco but did not realise he was involved in crime - a story he backed up.

Homeless U.S. Army veteran and unemployed carpenter Steven Wise (R), receives a dental checkup at a "Stand Down" event hosted by the Department of Veterans Affairs on November 3 in Denver, Colorado. A week ahead of Veterans Day, more than 500 homeless veterans were expected to attend the event, where they received free clothing, medical care, employment assistance and were able to see a judge to resolve legal issues, among other services. Organizers say the homeless veterans population has surged in recent years with the high national unemployment rate. Stand Down is a military term that means a temporary stop of offensive military action.

he propellers create the full lift, and are also responsible for balancing the device on all three axes only by independent speed control of the motors. E-volo from the beginning has been designed entirely as an electrically powered device. Unlike the rotor of a helicopter, the propellers don“t have any pitch control and therefore no wear. These factors make the multicopter mechanically simple, with close to no maintenance necessary.

Call for Berlusconi to step down as Italy worries grow
https://teakdoor.com/images/imported/2011/11/293.jpg
Six former allies of Silvio Berlusconi in the Italian parliament have urged him to quit after his government failed to agree urgent economic reforms.
The rebel MPs wrote an open letter calling for a "new political phase and a new government" to enact reforms agreed with Italy's eurozone partners.
Mr Berlusconi told fellow G20 leaders at a summit in Cannes that Italy had always honoured its debts.
But Italian government bonds came under new pressure amid market jitters.
Yields on 10-year BTP bonds hit more than 6.3%, creeping closer to the level of 7% which many analysts believe could lead to a so-called "buyers' strike" where investors take fright and refuse to buy, Reuters news agency reports.
