Double rapist Frank Watson jailed for Hertfordshire attacks
https://teakdoor.com/images/imported/2011/10/2670.jpg
A man has been jailed for 16 years for two rapes carried out in the 1990s after being caught by DNA evidence.
Frank Watson, 47, of Gibbon Close, Borehamwood, Hertfordshire, was arrested in April for possessing 136 indecent images, some of children.
Police then found the DNA link to two cold-case rapes from 1991 and 1997.
Watson, who was convicted of the rapes at the Old Bailey in September, was told by the judge: "You have not shown a shred of remorse for your actions."
Recorder Brian O'Neill QC said: "You caused two women to relive their ordeals from 20 years ago again.
"These were totally dreadful crimes and the only sentence to pass upon you is a very lengthy sentence."
Real IRA's Michael Campbell found guilty after MI5 sting

An Irish man accused of involvement in weapons smuggling for the Real IRA in Lithuania has been found guilty and sentenced to 12 years in prison.
Michael Campbell, 39, from County Louth was caught in an MI5 weapons sting operation in 2008.
He was convicted of supporting a terrorist group, illegal possession of weapons and attempted smuggling.
He denied the charges against him, saying MI5 had set him up and claiming he was a victim of entrapment.
His two-year trial in Vilnius began in August 2009.
Campbell was secretly filmed test-firing weapons in the Lithuanian countryside, and some of his private conversations were bugged.
In a secretly-recorded conversation, he was overheard talking about planting bombs in London.
He said he wanted weapons for use against "Brits".
Northern Ireland Secretary of State Owen Paterson welcomed the conviction.
China accuses Dalai Lama of encouraging suicide by fire
https://teakdoor.com/images/imported/2011/10/2672.jpg China brands Dalai Lama's prayers as encouragement to terrorism
China has again accused the Dalai Lama of encouraging people in ethnically Tibetan parts of China to commit suicide.
It comes after the exiled Tibetan spiritual leader offered prayers for eight monks and a nun who have set themselves on fire.
It is not clear how many of them have died in what is said to have been protests against Chinese rule.
China said the self-immolations were "terrorism in disguise".
China's foreign ministry said the "Dalai group" - a reference to the Tibetan spiritual leader and his followers - had "played up" the protests in south-west China, which have escalated dramatically in recent weeks.
"In the wake of the incidents, overseas Tibet independent forces and the Dalai group did not criticise the cases," foreign ministry spokeswoman Jiang Yu told journalists at a regular briefing.
"On the contrary, they beautified, played up such issues to incite more people to follow suit. As we know, such splittist activities at the cost of human lives is violence and terrorism in disguise," Ms Jiang said.
She repeated Beijing's assertion that Tibetans in China are free to practise their religious beliefs.
US jobs plan: Senate blocks key proposal
https://teakdoor.com/images/imported/2011/10/2673.jpg
The US Senate has blocked a key piece of President Barack Obama's jobs bill that would have imposed higher taxes on the rich to help create jobs for teachers, police and emergency workers.
Senators voted 50-50 on the legislation, 10 short of the 60 votes needed to allow debate on the measure.
The proposal is part of Mr Obama's $447bn (£283bn) package designed to kickstart the flagging US economy.
The plan also failed in the Senate and is now being proposed piece-by-piece.
The president has been on the road regularly in recent weeks pushing his plan, but Republicans remain opposed.
"For the second time in two weeks, every single Republican in the United States Senate has chosen to obstruct a bill that would create jobs and get our economy going again," Mr Obama said in a statement, describing their position as "unacceptable".

A Welsh World Cup campaign that held so much promise a week ago ended in disappointment as Australia won the third-place play-off.
A try and drop-goal from Berrick Barnes and eight points from the boot of James O'Connor left Wales with fourth place despite a try from Shane Williams in possibly his last Test appearance.
In an error-ridden contest short on quality and atmosphere, Wales failed to replicate their devastating attacking form of earlier in the tournament.
A succession of handling errors gifted the Wallabies the initiative, and Leigh Halfpenny's try in the 83rd minute came too late to deny Robbie Deans' men.
While the result gives Australia revenge for Wales' victory in the corresponding game in the inaugural World Cup 24 years ago, a serious knee injury to fly-half Quade Cooper left their celebrations muted.

Council officials have served 48-hour notices detailing how they will remove homes from the UK's largest illegal travellers' site.
Despite a mass walk-out of travellers and supporters from Dale Farm, Essex, on Thursday, between 20 and 30 people spent the night inside the site. Among them was mother-of-two Margaret Flynn, who is entitled to keep her caravan on the site, although the hard-standing beneath it will be removed.
She said: "We hardly slept last night, the kids just kept thinking about what had happened and how the police came into the site. I'm entitled to stay but it is not home any more. It felt very lonely in here."
Basildon Council officers, escorted by police and bailiffs, toured the site on Friday morning, placing notices on structures. The notices inform residents what will be removed. This includes demolishing fences and walls to allow access, although these will be reinstated.

St Paul's Cathedral has been forced to close its doors to the public because of the anti-capitalist protest taking place outside.
The Dean of St Paul's, the Rev Graeme Knowles, said the decision to close the cathedral was made with "heavy hearts". He said the decision was taken after church officials received a report by health and safety officials.
The Dean asked the activists, who have occupied a makeshift campsite outside the main entrance of the house of worship since Saturday, to move on.
The cathedral has not been closed since the Second World War, the Dean said. "We have a legal obligation to keep visitors safe and healthy," he added.
