Fletcher suspect Matouk Mohamed Matouk 'found in Libya'

Libya's interim leaders know the whereabouts of a suspect in the murder of PC Yvonne Fletcher, reports say.

The Daily Telegraph says Matouk Mohamed Matouk is the last named suspect alive connected with the killing outside the Libyan embassy in London.

The paper quotes Ali Tarhouni, a senior National Transitional Council (NTC) figure, saying "we know where he is".

PM David Cameron said he was sure the NTC would co-operate fully with Scotland Yard's ongoing investigation.

Mr Tarhouni denied reports that Mr Matouk had been placed under house arrest due to his long service with the Gaddafi regime, the Telegraph said.

German city of Bonn taxes prostitutes with meter

The German city of Bonn has installed a meter to tax prostitutes for soliciting on its streets at a rate of six euros (£5.30; $8.70) per night.

Those who fail to pay face fines or even a ban, and 264 euros were found in the meter when it was first emptied, according to AFP news agency.

Tax has been levied on prostitutes elsewhere but Bonn is the first city to use a meter, a spokeswoman said.

But a prostitutes' rights activist said the scheme amounted to double taxation.
Prostitutes are expected to pay the flat rate, regardless of earnings.

The machine, which looks like an ordinary parking meter, has been installed in an industrial area near the city centre which favoured by prostitutes and their clients.

Bolivia: Senior officials jailed over 2003 protests

Bolivia's Supreme Court has convicted five top military officers over the killings of at least 64 people during protests in 2003.

Four former generals and an admiral were sentenced to between 10 and 15 years in prison.

Two former ministers were jailed for three years each for complicity in what was described as a "genocide".

The protesters in El Alto had demanded an end to the export of natural gas to the US using Chilean ports.

It is the first time that high-ranking military men have been convicted by a civilian court in Bolivia for human rights abuses, reports the BBC's Mattia Cabitza from the court in the Bolivian city of Sucre.

The former generals, Roberto Claros Flores, Juan Veliz Herrera, Jose Ovaldo Quiroga and Gonzalo Alberto Rocabado, and Adm Luis Alberto Aranda Granados were jailed over what has become known as the "Black October case".

US officials quit over Mexico gun flow probe

Kenneth Melson acknowledged errors to congressional investigators

The acting director of the US Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms (ATF) and the US attorney in Arizona are resigning over a botched operation to track the flow of guns to Mexico.

The ATF's Kenneth Melson had recently faced pressure by Congress to resign.
Operation Fast and Furious saw US agents allowing thousands of guns into Mexico illegally with the hope of tracing them to major arms dealers.

But hundreds of guns went missing and dozens have turned up at crime scenes.
The operation never led to any arrests.

The US attorney in Minnesota, B Todd Jones, will replace Mr Melson.

"As a seasoned prosecutor and former military judge advocate, US Attorney Jones is a demonstrated leader who brings a wealth of experience to this position," said Attorney General Eric Holder in a statement on Tuesday.

Mr Melson will be reassigned to the Department of Justice's Office of Legal Policy as an adviser on forensic science, Mr Holder added.

Kosovo Islamist admits Frankfurt attack on US airmen

A Kosovo man has told a German court he regrets shooting dead two US servicemen at Frankfurt airport and does not understand why he did it.

Arid Uka, 21, told the court he had been radicalised by jihadist propaganda videos he watched online.

Prosecutors believe he acted alone in carrying out the first deadly attack by an Islamist on German soil.

Two other US airmen were seriously injured in the attack on an air force bus in March.

"What I did was wrong, but I cannot undo what I did," Mr Uka told the court in Frankfurt at the opening of his trial.

Prosecutors said he had wanted to kill the airmen because they were going to join the Nato-led force in Afghanistan.

Channel record for Guernsey swimmer Roger Allsopp, 70

A retired surgeon has achieved his ambition of becoming the oldest person to swim the English Channel.

Roger Allsopp, from Guernsey, who was 70 in April, completed the 21-nautical mile swim in 17 hours and 51 minutes.

He said: "I do feel an immense sense of achievement and relief that I have been successful."

The former breast cancer surgeon beat the current Guinness World Record set by George Brunstad, the uncle of Hollywood actor Matt Damon.

Mr Allsop, who described his feat as "an incredible personal challenge", was hoping to raise thousands of pounds towards cancer research at the University of Southampton.

"I've never been one to sit on my laurels. Retirement has been wonderful but I know how important it is to keep active in mind and body to live a healthy retirement and so I set myself physical challenges to ensure that I keep as fit and healthy as I can," he said.

Graphene 'could help boost broadband internet speeds'

Graphene, the strongest material on Earth, could help boost broadband internet speed, say UK researchers.

Scientists from Manchester and Cambridge universities, have found a way to improve its sensitivity when used in optical communications systems.

Their discovery paves the way for faster electronics components, such as the receivers used in fibre optic data connections.

Graphene was discovered in 2004 and has been hailed as a "wonder material".
