Floods in parts of north-east England after heavy rain

Emergency services across north-east England have received hundreds of calls after heavy rain caused localised flooding.

Darlington, Durham, Consett and parts of Northumberland are the worst hit areas, with some homes flooded.

The Environment Agency warned areas across the north of England could face disruption, predicting up to 50mm (2in) of rain on Saturday night.

Durham and Darlington Fire and Rescue service said conditions were "severe".

There have so far not been any reports of injuries.

Newcastle Utd's friendly match against Italian side Fiorentina at St James' Park was called off after 64 minutes due to torrential rain, with the score tied at 0-0.

A fire service spokesman said: "Conditions are severe in some areas where we have had localised flooding.

"There have also been at least two incidents were properties have been struck by lightning.

Newcastle suffered heavy rain, leading to difficult driving conditions

"However, so far we have not had any reports of people being injured."

Durham Police said an incident room had been set up to deal with calls from the public.

Northumbria Police said some minor roads had been affected by the heavy downpours, but that so far no properties had been hit.

An Environment Agency spokesman said river levels in County Durham and Northumberland were being monitored closely.

He added: "Homeowners and motorists are warned to be prepared as a band of rain moves northwards from the East Anglian region up to the North East.

"People should be prepared to activate emergency procedures as there may be flash flooding and drains overflowing."

US frees Abu Ghraib abuse ringleader Charles Graner

Images of a grinning Charles Graner abusing Iraqi prisoners caused international outrage

The ringleader of the US military guards who photographed their abuse of suspected Iraqi insurgents at Baghdad's Abu Ghraib prison has been released.

Charles Graner served more than six-and-a-half years of a 10-year sentence, army officials said.

Graner, a former US Army Reserve specialist, was convicted of leading his six-member team in the sexual humiliation of naked prisoners.

Images of the acts emerged in 2004, sparking international outrage.

He said he was breaking down prisoners for interrogation on the orders of military intelligence officers.

His former fiancee and fellow guard Lynndie England served a three-year sentence for her part in the abuse.

US military spokeswoman Rebecca Steed said Graner, who was freed from Fort Leavenworth, Kansas, will be under the supervision of a probation officer until December 2014.

    Infamous photographs
Graner and six other members of the Maryland-based 372nd Military Police Company were charged in 2004 with abusing detainees.

Some of them appear in the infamous photographs of prisoners being humiliated and beaten, displaying obvious satisfaction at the acts.

Graner said the actions were part of a plan directed by military intelligence officers to soften up prisoners for interrogation.

He received the longest sentence of those convicted and is the last defendant in the Abu Ghraib case to be released.

Hana Adwar, an Iraqi human rights activist, told the Associated Press news agency that his release would be met with outrage in Iraq.

"He was charged with a crime that shocked the international community," she said.

New Zealand bans synthetic cannabis products

A 12-month ban of synthetic cannabis products has come into effect in New Zealand.

The government says the 43 artificial cannabis products can harm health, including causing heart problems

But consumers of the products say the ban will force them to buy recreational drugs on the black market.

Among the prohibited substances is a popular brand known as Kronic, which has been a legal alternative to marijuana for several years.

It is smoked like marijuana and has been available in shops and tobacconists.

Some retailers believe that other legal highs will continue to flood a very popular, and lucrative, market.

Chris Fowlie, manager of the Hemp store in New Zealand's largest city Auckland, says there will be ways for suppliers to circumvent the new regulations.

"I think this will encourage companies to just put out one product at a time, you know, maximise their sales for it and then when that gets banned simply replace it with the next one," he said.

"We already know that there are hundreds if not thousands of synthetic cannabinoids out there."

But Peter Dunne, New Zealand's associate minister for health, says that if new products become available they too could be banned.

"The temporary class drug notice will be able to be made available to any psycho-active substance where there is a risk, or a perceived risk or an apparent risk to, if you like, human safety," he said.

The new law comes into place on Friday and stockists have until the middle of the month to remove the products from their shelves.

The ban will initially run for 12 months.

Next year New Zealand's conservative government plans to bring in comprehensive changes based on a review of the country's drug legislation by the Law Commission

World number one Luke Donald carded the joint best round of the day with a 64 to trail by three shots after the third round of the WGC Invitational in Ohio.

Donald is in a share of sixth, while overnight leader Adam Scott posted a 66 to reach 12 under and take a one-stroke lead over Ryo Ishikawa and Jason Day.

Rory McIlroy is five back after a 67, and world number two Lee Westwood trails by eight following a 68.

Tiger Woods shot a 72 to finish in a share of 38th place at one over.

Resuming on one under in a share of 36th, Woods was in the rare position of being out at 0700 local time in the first group, as the 76-man field was cut in half and sent out in threes from two tees to avoid the threat of thunderstorms later in the day.

Playing partner Ian Poulter went left off the tee, needed two more shots to find the fairway, went long with his fourth and took three more from 15 feet to record a triple bogey seven.

Poulter suffered a double bogey at the third and another triple bogey at the 14th in a disastrous round of 80 that left him 22 shots behind Scott at 10 over.

Woods hit a fine approach to six feet at the 15th to collect his second birdie but dropped a third shot of the day at the par-five 16th after sending his pitch into the bunker.

Remarkably Bubba Watson's tee shot travelled over 400 yards at that 667-yard hole, and he took an iron for his second from 247 yards.

McIlroy, after birdies at the two previous holes, missed a five foot birdie chance at the last but finished with a 67, while Westwood dropped only one shot in his 68.

Donald sank a six-foot putt at the 17th for his seventh birdie of the day but took three from the edge of the green at the last.

"I finally made a few putts and felt very comfortable," the 33-year-old said. "Less thoughts seemed to work today. I hit a lot of fairways and greens and gave myself a lot of opportunities."

Thousands of people march in the streets during a protest against the rising cost of living on Aug. 6, in Tel Aviv, Israel. Protests across Israel were spurred following a Knesset vote to approve the national housing committees law, which places the authority for approving building projects in the hands of regional committees.
