Tony Blair: UK could still join euro in future
https://teakdoor.com/images/imported/2011/06/4835.jpg
Former prime minister Tony Blair has said there might still be a case for the UK joining the euro in the future.
He told the BBC he did not agree with people who argued joining would be a disaster, but there had to be a compelling economic case for doing so.
He said he believed the euro would eventually resolve its problems and the case for Britain joining may become "compelling ... at a certain point".
David Cameron said it would be a "dreadful idea" for Britain to join.
The prime minister, in Brussels for an EU summit where Greece's debt crisis is among items on the agenda, said: "Britain is out of the euro - I think we will stay out of the euro and certainly as long as I am doing this job there is no prospect of Britain even contemplating joining the euro."

Habitat stores enter administration as part of sale
https://teakdoor.com/images/imported/2011/06/4838.jpg
All but three UK Habitat stores are being put into administration in a deal to sell the indebted furniture chain.
Home Retail Group, owner of Argos and Homebase, will buy the Habitat brand and three central London stores for £24.5m in cash.
Habitat has appointed administrators for its other 30 outlets, which will continue trading for now.
HRG will retain 100 staff at the London stores and 50 in "brand support", which includes Habitat's furniture designers.
It is unclear what will happen to Habitat's other 750 employees, including those at the branches in administration.
Habitat, which was set up in 1964 by designer Sir Terence Conran, has been owned by the private equity firm Hilco since it bought the heavily-indebted retailer from Ikea-affiliate Ikano in 2009.
"Of course I'm sad that my love child, Habitat, appears to be dying, but I am more interested in the future of my own business and design projects - that is my focus," said Sir Terence Conran.

Shoesmith sacking: Government and council seek appeal
https://teakdoor.com/images/imported/2011/06/4839.jpg
Haringey Council and the Department for Education are to seek an appeal at the Supreme Court against a ruling that Sharon Shoesmith was unfairly sacked.
In May, Court of Appeal judges said her dismissal by then children's secretary Ed Balls and her employers, Haringey Council, was "procedurally unfair".
Ms Shoesmith was head of children's services when baby Peter Connelly was found dead with more than 50 injuries.
He had been seen 60 times by social services before his death in 2007.
A year later, Ms Shoesmith learned of her sacking in a live televised press conference by Mr Balls, bringing her 35-year career to an abrupt end.
Ms Shoesmith's appeal in May 2011 challenged a High Court ruling that cleared Mr Balls, the north London borough of Haringey and watchdog Ofsted of acting unlawfully.
The Court of Appeal judges dismissed her appeal against Ofsted, but did rule that her dismissal by Haringey and Mr Balls three years ago had been "procedurally unfair".
At the time, Mr Balls said he "strongly disagreed" with the judgement and added that his decision had been based on a report from independent inspectors.
On Friday, a Haringey Council spokesman said: "The council believes it acted properly throughout the process and stands by everything it has done.

Indian girl 'sold for sex' by her father in Kerala
https://teakdoor.com/images/imported/2011/06/4840.jpg
A 17-year-old Indian girl who was allegedly forced by her father to have sex for money with up to 200 men has described her ordeal to the media.
Police in the southern Indian state of Kerala arrested her father and 29 other people two weeks ago.
The girl said she was raped by her father, starved and forced by him to have sex with other men.
Her father has not made any public comment. Police have vowed to hunt down the men alleged to have paid for sex.
They have despatched special police teams to find up to 70 men she has named and accused of paying to have sex with her. These are said to include contractors, film producers and policemen.
"My father first raped me when my mum was not home. Later he started taking me out to different locations, saying I'll get a chance to act in movies," the girl told a local television channel.
She says that when her mother found out, her father threatened to kill the entire family unless her mother kept silent. Police have arrested the mother for not disclosing a crime.
"The government will not allow anyone to escape the law," Chief Minister Oomen Chandy said.

James Bulger father's statement at Venables hearing
https://teakdoor.com/images/imported/2011/06/4842.jpg
The father of murdered Liverpool toddler James Bulger has given a victim statement at the parole hearing of Jon Venables, one of his son's killers.
Ralph Bulger told Leeds Crown Court his life has been a "daily nightmare" since James was murdered in 1993.
Appearing via videolink from Liverpool Crown Court, he told the hearing he suffered from post-traumatic stress and depression.
Venables, 28, was jailed last year for downloading images of child sex abuse.
Speaking outside Liverpool Crown Court, Mr Bulger's solicitor Robin Makin said: "It's a daily nightmare for all of them. It still is. Things have not really got better.
"The problem as we see it is this - the authorities, because of their liberal agenda, don't really want to see Jon Venables for the person that he actually is.
"The authorities just don't want to see what is there, the sexual element, how that has undoubtedly scarred Jon Venables all his life and came to manifest itself later on."
Denise Fergus, James's mother, did not attend the hearing but made a statement to the parole board in writing.
The board now has 10 days to consider its decision.

Columbo star Peter Falk dies aged 83
https://teakdoor.com/images/imported/2011/06/4857.jpg
Peter Falk, the American actor most famous for his role as TV's scruffy detective, Columbo, has died at the age of 83.
The actor died peacefully at home in Beverly Hills on Thursday night, his family said in a statement.
He had been suffering from dementia for a number of years.
Peter Falk won four Emmys for his cigar-chomping role as the deceptively bumbling Columbo, and was nominated for Oscars in 1960 and 1961.
In the 1987 cult classic The Princess Bride, he played a kindly old man regaling his sick grandson with a fairytale combination of swordplay, giants, a beautiful princess and fearsome rodents of unusual size.
But for most fans, even his best-supporting actor nominations in Murder Inc and Pocketful of Miracles were eclipsed by his incarnation as the sleuth in the shabby mac with no known first name and the killer catch-phrase: "One more thing..."
