People over 65 should drink less, a report says
https://teakdoor.com/images/imported/2011/06/4343.jpg
Recommended safe limits for drinking alcohol by older people should be drastically cut, according to a report.
The Royal College of Psychiatrists says people over 65 should drink a maximum of only 1.5 units of alcohol a day.
That is the equivalent of just over about half a pint of beer or a small glass of wine.
The report says older drinkers are less able to process alcohol and the drink might also interact with medication they may be taking for other ailments.
It warns current advice - 14 units of alcohol for women and 21 for men each week - is based on work with young adults

Sudan to block oil pipeline if south will not pay
https://teakdoor.com/images/imported/2011/06/4344.jpg
Sudanese President Omar al-Bashir has threatened to shut pipelines carrying South Sudan's oil if a deal on oil is not reached before it secedes in July.
He said either the south could continue to hand over half of its oil revenue to the north, or it could pay for using the north's oil infrastructure.
Mr Bashir warned that if neither was accepted, he would block the pipeline.
Three-quarters of Sudan's oil is in the south, but most pipelines, refineries and the main port are in the north.
Southerners voted for independence in a referendum in January.
President Bashir made his threat in a speech at a rally in Port Sudan - the main oil export terminal - which was broadcast on national television.
"I give the south three alternatives for the oil," he said.
"The north is to continue getting its share, or the north gets fees for every barrel that the south sends to Port Sudan," he added.
"If they don't accept either of these, we're going to block the pipeline."
The BBC's James Copnall in the captial, Khartoum, says oil accounts for about 98% of the south's income, so any reduction in the oil flow would be disastrous.
The government of South Sudan has floated the idea of building a new pipeline through Kenya or Uganda, but this would take several years, our correspondent adds.

Suu Kyi reveals DJ Dave Lee Travis 'lifeline'
https://teakdoor.com/images/imported/2011/06/4345.jpg
Burmese pro-democracy leader Aung San Suu Kyi has said Dave Lee Travis' BBC World Service music request show gave her a lifeline under house arrest.
The Nobel Peace Prize winner, who has spent 15 years under house arrest since 1989, said A Jolly Good Show had made her "world much more complete".
Travis, who presented the show from 1981-2001, said he was "touched" but "not surprised" she remembered it.
Ms Suu Kyi also said she felt "very sorry" about cuts to the World Service.
Ms Suu Kyi, who is due to give two of the BBC's Reith Lectures - which have been secretly recorded - told the Radio Times: "I used to listen to all sorts of different programmes, not just classical music. I can't remember... the name of that programme... Dave Travis? Was it?"
After interviewer Eddie Mair, who presents BBC Radio 4's PM programme, asked if she meant Dave Lee Travis, Ms Suu Kyi said: "Yes! Didn't he have a programme with all different sorts of music?
"I would listen to that quite happily because the listeners would write in and I had a chance to hear other people's words."

Al-Qaeda militants 'break out' of Yemen jail
https://teakdoor.com/images/imported/2011/03/3805.jpg
Dozens of al-Qaeda militants have escaped from a prison in southern Yemen following an attack, officials say.
They said the inmates fought their way out of the jail in Mukalla as militants attacked the prison from the outside.
About 40 militants are said to have escaped, including some convicted on terrorism charges and others held pending trial.
Months of unrest in Yemen have led to fears of al-Qaeda's influence spreading.
Unnamed Yemeni officials said one member of the security forces was killed in Wednesday's attack.
A medical source told AFP news agency that two other security personnel had been wounded, and that several militants were also injured.

Photographer shot in second night of Belfast rioting

BBC's Mark Simpson: "There is a loyalist pro-British paramilitary faction called the UVF who seem to want to cause a lot of trouble at the moment"
Police say about 700 people have been involved in a second night of sectarian violence near a Catholic enclave in east Belfast.
Three shots were fired in the lower Newtownards Road-Short Strand area but the gunman's target was not known.
A photographer was shot in the leg and police urged the media to stay away.
A barrage of petrol bombs, missiles and fireworks were thrown at police lines, in what is being reported as the worst trouble in the area for a decade.
Two other men were injured. They are believed to have suffered burn injuries.
The MP for the area, Naomi Long, told the BBC a man who was struck with a brick on Tuesday night has suffered a fractured skull.
She described the trouble as a "very serious situation" and said appeals from political representatives for calm had fallen on "deaf ears".
"People need to step back from this situation," she said.
"We have had another round of gunfire on Tuesday night, we have had someone else injured with a bullet wound.
"When you have guns back on streets, it is very clear that the intent here is to take life.
"There is no other reason why people would bring a gun onto the street, and I think that people need to take a step back and really think about what they are doing."

Qantas announces profits and Rolls-Royce settlement
https://teakdoor.com/images/imported/2011/06/4358.jpg
Australian carrier Qantas has agreed on a settlement with engine-maker Rolls-Royce over a mid-air blast incident and the grounding of the Qantas fleet of superjumbos.
Rolls-Royce will pay 95m Australian dollars ($100m; £62m), said Qantas.
The compensation helped boost Qantas' pre-tax profit for the year ending 30 June 2011 to between A$500-550m.
The airline has faced a string of natural disasters that have disrupted flights this year.
The settlement is in connection with a Qantas A380 plane that had to make an emergency landing after one of its engines exploded shortly after take off from Singapore on 4 November last year.
The engine was a Rolls-Royce manufactured Trent-900.
Qantas initially grounded all six of its Airbus superjumbos after the blast.
Qantas chief executive Alan Joyce said the settlement marked the end of legal proceedings the airline brought against Rolls-Royce in December.
"Qantas looks forward to a continued strong relationship with Rolls-Royce on the basis of the settlement announced today," the airline said in a statement.

Australia in 'national crisis' over Aborigine jailings
https://teakdoor.com/images/imported/2011/06/4359.jpg
Australia is facing a "national crisis" over the number of Aborigines being put in jail, a report by a parliamentary committee claims.
The report says a quarter of prisoners in Australia are Aboriginal, despite making up only 2.5% of the population.
In juvenile prisons, the figure is almost 60%.
Officials said poor housing, mental illness and alcohol and drug abuse contributed to the problem, and called for creative approaches.
Attorney General Robert McClelland said the statistics were alarming.
"There has been an increasing trend with law and order severity which I think the general community accepts, particularly in respect to violent crimes," he said.
"But I think locking people up for fine defaults and driving offences in circumstances where Aborigines in remote communities... find it almost impossible to get a driver's licence is really taking that philosophy far too far."

French former minister Georges Tron held over sex case
https://teakdoor.com/images/imported/2011/06/4360.jpg
French police have detained former minister Georges Tron over sex charges, the local prosecutor's office has said.
Mr Tron resigned as junior civil service minister last month after being accused of sexually assaulting two women who worked in the town hall where he is mayor.
He was arrested on Monday for questioning, as part of prosecutors' preliminary inquiries.
He has not been charged in the case, and denies the accusations.
Police can hold Mr Tron for 24 hours and extend his arrest for another 24 hours, said prosecutor Marie-Suzanne Le Queau.
One of his deputies at the Draveil town hall is also being held.
A third accuser has also "recently brought charges" against Mr Tron, according to sources close to the investigation. Her identity or connection to Mr Tron is not known.
The first two accusers allege Mr Tron gave them reflexology foot massages which turned into forced sexual encounters.
Mr Tron resigned from the government at the end of last month over the allegations, a few days after ex-IMF chief Dominique Strauss-Kahn's arrest in New York on sex crime charges. He remains mayor of Draveil.
At the time of his resignation, Ms Le Queau said that "if the facts alleged were established, they could come under the headings of sexual aggression and rape".

'La Familia cartel boss' Mendez Vargas held in Mexico
https://teakdoor.com/images/imported/2011/06/4361.jpg
Mexican President Felipe Calderon has congratulated police on the capture of the alleged leader of the notorious La Familia drugs cartel.
Police arrested Jose de Jesus Mendez Vargas, also known as "The Monkey", in the central city of Aguascalientes.
Mr Calderon described the capture as a great blow to organised crime.
La Familia has a reputation for gruesome violence but claims to protect local communities and promote family values.
Mexico's security spokesman Alejandro Poire said the arrest had "destroyed the chain of command" of the cartel.
The Mexican attorney general's office said Mr Mendez Vargas was "responsible for the transfer and sale of cocaine, marijuana, crystal methamphetamine in various states of Mexico and the US".
He is also accused of having masterminded the kidnappings and killings of rival gang members.
The government had offered a $2.5m reward for information leading to his capture.
A previous leader of La Familia, Nazario Moreno, was killed by security forces in December 2010.
His arrest led to a violent split in the gang. Mr Mendez Vargas is believed to remained head of the faction continuing under the name of La Familia

'World's oldest person' dies at 114 in Brazil
https://teakdoor.com/images/imported/2011/06/4362.jpg
A Brazilian woman thought to be the world's oldest person has died at the age of 114.
Maria Gomes Valentim died of multiple organ failure a few weeks before she was due to turn 115.
Guinness World Records said they had verified her birth record, from 1896, and just last month declared her the oldest living person .
Shortly before her death, she said she liked Brazil's national dish, feijoada, and pasties with plenty of hot sauce.
Guinness said that Ms Valentim died at the age of 114 years and 347 days.
She spent her life in the town of Carangola, in the east of the country.
Previously the title had been held by Besse Cooper from Georgia, in the United States.
But last month, Guinness said they had found that Ms Valentim was 48 days older than Ms Cooper.
https://teakdoor.com/images/imported/2011/06/4363.jpg The title will now revert to Besse Cooper of Monroe, Georgia
They said she attributed her longevity to a healthy diet, with a daily breakfast consisting of a bread roll, fruit and coffee.
She is survived by four grandchildren, seven gr
eat-grandchildren and five great-great-grandchildren.
Her son reportedly died in the early 1990s, at the age of 75.
Guinness said the title of world's oldest living person would now revert to Ms Cooper, who is 114 years and 299 days old.
