Christine Margaret Keeler (22 February 1942 – 4 December 2017) was an English model and showgirl. Her meeting at a dance-club with society osteopathStephen Ward drew her into fashionable circles. At the height of the Cold War, she became sexually involved with a married government minister, John Profumo, as well as a Soviet diplomat. A shooting incident between two of her other lovers caused the press to investigate her, revealing that her affairs could be threatening national security. In the House of Commons, Profumo denied any improper conduct but later admitted that he had lied. This incident discredited the Conservative government of Harold Macmillan in 1963 in what became known as the Profumo affair.

PM Theresa May has struck a last-minute deal with the EU in a bid to move Brexit talks on to the next phase.
There will be no "hard border" with Ireland; and the rights of EU citizens in the UK and UK citizens in the EU will be protected.
The so-called "divorce bill" will amount to between £35bn and £39bn, Downing Street sources say.
The European Commission president said it was a "breakthrough" and he was confident EU leaders will approve it.

Photos From the Deadly Eruption of Guatemala's Fuego Volcano

On June 3, Fuego volcano erupted in Guatemala, sending hot pyroclastic flows and heavy ash down its slopes onto nearby villages, killing at least 33 people, according to the head of Guatemala’s disaster agency, via the Associated Press. Fuego, one of the most active volcanoes in Central America, continued to send up smaller eruptions today, hampering efforts by rescuers who struggled to reach rural residents stranded by ash and mudflows.

After 10 Days Trapped in a Cave in Thailand, a Difficult Rescue Lies Ahead

In northern Thailand, hundreds of international rescue workers spent the past 10 days searching for a group of 12 boys, ages 11 to 16, and their 25-year-old soccer coach who became trapped in a cave after flooding caused by relentless monsoon rains. Late on July 2, rescue teams discovered all of the boys and their coach alive and in relatively good health, sheltering deep inside the cave complex. Outside, family and friends, who gathered in recent days to pray, welcomed the news. While the boys have been found, extracting them from the cave still remains a difficult task—much of the return trip is underwater and even though pumps are lowering the water level, the rainfall is not letting up. Thai officials are reportedly weighing options that include waiting for passages to become dry enough, or providing the boys with diving gear and having them swim through some submerged sections.

Strong winds drove wildfires across the villages, hills, and forests around Athens, Greece, starting on July 23, with authorities blaming the fires for at least 74 deaths. More than 300 firefighters were quickly mobilized to the area, but many residents scrambled to safety on their own—with hundreds racing to the shore to evacuate in small boats, or to try to swim away from advancing flames. While most of the fire has now been contained, the risk remains high, and Greek officials are asking for international assistance.

Glider Breaks New World Record Altitude of 23 Km, Successfully Lands (VIDEO)

    World News in Pictures-1067880428-jpg

"The previous record altitude had been reached by an unpowered aircraft by the same team at the end of August. The authors of the project hope that it will allow high-altitude air currents to be studied, which may help pilots of regular aircraft in the future.
The Perlan 2 Project's glider managed to reach an altitude of 23 kilometers during its latest flight over the region of El Calafate, Argentina, setting a new record for unpowered fixed-wing aircraft. The 700-kg glider was made of carbon fiber composite material with a wingspan of 25.5 meters.

During the five-hour flight, the glider not only recorded a live feed from the tail, but also collected atmospheric data, in particular air currents in the upper atmosphere. Such data may help better understand them and predict the invisible turbulence that jet pilots sometimes encounter during flights.

"The horizon starts to have a curvature in it and the sky is getting darker as we climb. It's a fantastic experience, once in a lifetime," one of two glider's pilots said, describing his experience.

The previous record was set on August 28, when the same glider reached an altitude of 20 kilometers.

    Central American Immigrant Caravan

On October 13, a group of hundreds of people gathered together to flee their impoverished home country of Honduras in a caravan headed toward the United States, seeking a better life for themselves and their families. That caravan quickly swelled to approximately 7,000 Central American immigrants as it passed north through Guatemala. As of today, most of these men, women, and children have just entered Mexico, yet they remain more than a thousand miles south of the U.S. border. President Donald Trump has called the approaching group a “national emergency,” vowed to cut tens of millions of dollars in aid to three Central American countries, and will possibly cancel a recent trade deal with Mexico if the caravan isn’t stopped before it reaches the U.S. Below, photographs of the caravan from its first 10 days and some of the difficult paths taken by those involved.

^ oh yes...at poverty level wages.

    https://www.ssa.gov/cgi-bin/netcomp.cgi?year=2017

By definition, 50 percent of wage earners had net compensation less than or equal to the median wage, which is estimated to be $31,561.49 for 2017.

ohoh I looked again at that link again...and I now think those wage numbers are before taxes.

Here's their definition of net compensation:

The national average wage index (AWI) is based on compensation (wages, tips, and the like) subject to Federal income taxes, as reported by employers on Forms W-2. Beginning with the AWI for 1991, compensation includes contributions to deferred compensation plans, but excludes certain distributions from plans where the distributions are included in the reported compensation subject to income taxes. We call the result of including contributions, and excluding certain distributions, net compensation.
I always thought of net pay(compensation) as after taxes and deductions. But the SS definition is something different.

Those people must be desperate AND out of their minds.
What do they think? They are just going to walk across the border?
U.S. Border stations are in the process of installing high caliber rapid fire machine guns.

I do wonder what these people are thinking, where they got this idea that they could just walok to and into the U.S.
Maybe a solution would be for the U.S. to annex the Honduras and put right whatever is so wrong that people would do this.
