I believe that the perspective elephant had two "steerers". One atop and the other stradling his head and ears. My understanding is that during these times, the elephants were highly trained and responded by voice commands, accordingly. Here in Thailand, there is an exhaustive wealth of books, papers, documentation on this very specific subject matter - war elephants. Cheers!
