I realize this is a tad late, but for the record:

I also doubt that HuangLao has the rights to the pictures - but it is likely that someone (or many different people) does have the rights to many/all the pics. Use in a book without permission from any copyright holder could cause problems.

Here probably (emphqasis on probably) comes under "fair use". A book would most likely not. Mind you farn did not say if he was intending to produce/publish the book.

Though, in such cases, as it applies to publishing pictorials in book form - almost all historic images do not carry clauses for required copyrights permission and whatnot. Certainly when applying to "public offered" historic items.

The examples of historic-based tomes with accompanied photos, coffee table variety photo books, etc - in which there are many - where copyright permission isn't sought nor required by fair use laws.

Sorry Jeff, but you are way off the mark here. Firstly, copyright protection starts at the moment of creation of the image/photo or whatever. You can register it - but that is NOT a requirement. Copyright is inherent in all photos the minute they were snapped.

Had a look around and the issue is complex. However, the UK position seems to say that copyright of a photograph lasts for the photographers life time plus 70 years. Obviously other jurisdictions will vary.

For photos, reproduction here is actually NOT covered by the fair use laws (if there is an extant copyright), which cover a very specific set of circumstances (basically commentary or parody).

Anything for profit (such as coffee table books)is most definitely outside fair use. All in all, be careful where you steal your photos from.
