I think friscofrankie captured the essence of Chiang Mai. There really is only one street with girly bars on it and the bewildered look on the gentleman's face as to where else to go for a drink and some nookie really shows.
The sign for the "Why Not" bar also captures the feeling of Loi Kroh Road. Walk up and down the street and you'll finally say "Why not, nothing better round here."
The street is loaded with the motorbikes of the working class and there they are; just waiting around for customers that will not show as it is Chiang Mai.
PLUS: He was completely smashed when he took it and subsequently entered it in the competition. Hats off to you frisco, you get my vote for best Chiang Mai related photo. About time someone took a shot of something other than the temple.

I really like the bored look and the girls crossed legs out front....
frisco, how long did it take to get the perfect shot?
some of the pics obviously mean a lot to the takers, but are not the best
some are Ok pics but do not have that "special something"
some are merely repeating typical postcard pics
some are very good indeed, they make me jealous
incidentally, to make things easier when voting, open up a second window just showing the poll
then you can tick off the pics you like without having to scroll up and down many times
I have reported your post

I actually took about 10 -15 exposures of variations on this theme. Wanted to feature the tuk tuk in a close foreground but lighting and Standing still for a long enough exposure was kind of tough at the time. I was drinking shots of Jameson and Tiger beers in between attempts at arty shit.
There was a small stool to reserve a parking spot I sat down, liked the perspective and threw an off-hand shot. Liked the results. The shot is hardly perfect. But it does capture a dead night on loi kroh pretty well
I see that Thetyims pic is doing very well
I liked it, but it is just a nice postcard shot; is it a winner?

Time to comment on some of the leaders but first my own entry:
I just realised that it doesn't fit on the screen heightwise. This was a silly mistake. I normally go for more candid shots but felt this worked as a posed shot. If the competition had been announced before I had posted my best holiday pics I reckon I would have been in with a shout
Toslti: nicely exposed night shot capturing the feel of Bangkoks roads.
Friscofrankie: good shot capturing the feel of the street. The line of scooters forming a repeating pattern is good and the low camera angle enhances it. The Tuktuk adds to the feel of thailand and the guy on the right is great, unfortunately, further to the right it all goes wrong. The legs growing out of his arse and the girl walking out of the picture spoil it.
Burrinamboy: Good potential but needs some work to give it more punch, it is far too flat.
Megahorn: Captures the feel of Sonkran but looks like the exposure is off and the top left of the picture looks too empty. A bit of cropping would help but still not completely save it in my opinion.
Nawty: I like this one, needs to be larger. I'd have cropped the bottom to remove the highlights ath the base of the picture, possibly right up to the reflected poles.
DD: A little lacking in contrast. I would crop it just above the mans head to increase the feeling of isolation and would have tried either a slow shutter speed to put movement in the people passing by or a bigger aperture to give differential
focusing. This could be simulated in photoshop with a careful selection and applying gaussian blur.
Jasonbalmer: A great scene and very well captured. I suspect most reasonably competent photographers would end up with good results here, but that doesn't detract from it and isn't a location I've come across before.
bobcock: very good attempt, can't see much wrong to offer constructive comment, but not the most exciting image.
thetyim: Nice low angle, figure on the right is in a perfect position, sharp through the frame helped by a wide angle lens. I think this is great, but if you crop it to a letterbox shape and down the left to remove the second figure I think it looks even better.
Completely unphotoshopped mind you.but not the most exciting image.
Doesn't get any bonuses from me for that I'm afraid. I used to manipulate things in the darkroom, now I do it in Photoshop, It's just easier in Photoshop so I don't have to spend 6 hours stumbling around in the dark. It's an image I'd have been proud to have in my album by the way, just not the right impact for a competition.Originally Posted by Bobcock

I originally took a picture of a painting of Jesus, & through the magic of photoshop I made it look like a statue of the Buddha.

Hats off to Thetyim.
Don't know wha yo know or what you don't. BUt I see it as praise indeed. Thanks. Photography is about making the best of what you get. Luck, skill and more luck pay an important part. You should of seen the shot before. Sadly I wasn't completely ready. That one would a been a winner.Originally Posted by BigRed
This is the thing abut shooting good shit man. There is an element of luck. there is an element of skill. But. Taking the shot is all aout being ready at the right time. I wasn't and the pic taken two seconds prior to the one entered would hace been so much nicer if...
the thing i like the most on bobcock's image are the colours. looks like from some 70s asian movie, really awesome. if the person holding cake was a girl, would be more interesting for us i guess too
lol....nah DD I got another pic of that subject....maybe should have entered it.
BiGRed, you obviously know what you are talking about.
Also I like the word 'attempt'.....
shame i didnt discover this forum earlier, would like to post my photo for competition too...
oh well have to wait until next year i guess.
A lot of good photos there so well done everybody. In the end I just chose the one and went with my gut feeling (the photo I spent the most time looking at and scrolled back too ) which was of John Lennon and the whitest little Thai girl.
A real magic moment picture and you can really sense the love and intimacy between father and daughter in it.
Well done JuniorExpat.
