    'Get in there Frank!'

Former BBC boxing commentator Harry Carpenter has died at the age of 84.
Carpenter was the BBC's voice of boxing for almost half a century after joining the corporation in 1949, when he first began commentating on the sport.
Known for his double act with British boxing great Frank Bruno, Carpenter also presented Sportsnight, Grandstand and Sports Personality of the Year.
He retired in 1994 and died in his sleep at King's College Hospital in London in the early hours of Saturday.
Carpenter, who also wrote for the Greyhound Express and Daily Mail in the early years of his career, was on air for the "Rumble in the Jungle" between Muhammad Ali and George Foreman in Zaire (now the Democratic Republic of Congo) in 1974.

He labelled the end of the contest - underdog Ali won by knockout in the eighth round to reclaim the world heavyweight crown at the age of 32 - as "the most extraordinary few seconds that I have ever seen in a boxing ring".
Of Ali himself, Carpenter said: "He is not only the most remarkable sports personality I have ever met, he is the most remarkable man I have ever met."
Carpenter had the privilege of presenting Ali with the BBC's Sports Personality of the Century award in 1999.
A year later, Carpenter recalled: "It was a wonderfully poignant moment. I was very flattered and pleased that I was asked to do the tribute to him.
"It was such a shame to see the old boy tottering about, but we had a chat afterwards and he is still very, very sharp. He remembers all those old days."
Carpenter was a regular Sports Personality of the Year co-host throughout the 1970s and 1980s, having first worked on the programme in 1958, and also covered a wide range of sports for the BBC, including rowing, tennis and golf.
His immediately recognisable, warm broadcasting style earned him plaudits outside the United Kingdom, too.
In 1989, he received American Sportscasters' Association and International Sportscaster of the Year awards.

Dennis Hopper may be checking out soon. 73 ain't bad.

Divorce attorney says Dennis Hopper is dying

Lawyer says in court filing that actor can’t be questioned in a deposition

    March 24, 2010

LOS ANGELES - Dennis Hopper is terminally ill and unable to undergo chemotherapy as he battles prostate cancer, his attorney wrote in a court filing.

Attorney Joseph Mannis wrote about the "Easy Rider" star's grave condition in a declaration filed Wednesday asserting the actor cannot be questioned by his wife's attorneys in a deposition.

The prognosis contradicts previous filings in the divorce proceedings that were bullish about Hopper's recovery chances.

The square-jawed actor was best known for his double act with Bill Cosby in popular 60s TV show I Spy.
The pair played undercover agents, with Culp in the role of tennis star Kelly Robinson and Cosby as his trainer Alexander Scott.

Last night, Los Angeles police said Culp hit his head after collapsing while out walking and was pronounced dead on arrival at Queen of Angels hospital. A preliminary investigation found the death was accidental.
Father-of-four Culp's career spanned more than five decades. In films, he starred with Natalie Wood in Bob & Carol & Ted & Alice in 1969.
He played the President in The Pelican Brief in 1993.

    Thomas Angrove

Inventor of the Wine cask - Invented by Thomas Angove of Renmark, South Australia, the wine cask is a cardboard box housing a plastic container which collapses as the wine is drawn off, thus preventing contact with the air. Angroves' original design with a resealable spout was replaced with a tap by the Penfolds wine company in 1972

John Forsythe, the actor who made his fortune as TV's affable Bachelor Father and the scheming oil tycoon in Dynasty, has died at the age of 92.

Publicist Harlan Boll said Forsythe died late on Thursday from complications of pneumonia, following a year-long battle with cancer in Santa Ynez, California.
Despite his distinguished work in theatre and films, Forsythe's greatest fame arose from his role of Blake Carrington in the 1981-89 primetime TV soap opera Dynasty.
With his full head of silver hair, tanned face and soothing voice, Forsythe as Carrington attracted the ardour of millions of female television viewers.
While he had small roles in a couple of films in the early 1940s, Forsythe's first successes were mainly on the stage.
Well, luckily I didn't have any tortoises on me at the time...

Meinhardt Raabe, one of last surviving Munchkins, dies in Penney Farms

    Posted: April 9, 2010 - 3:48pm

Meinhardt Raabe, who played the Munchkin coroner in the 1939 film "The Wizard of Oz," is dead at 94.
Mr. Raabe died Friday at his home in Penney Farms, a Clay County retirement community where he had lived since 1986, said Bob Rigel, president of the Penney Retirement Community.
He had one speech in "The Wizard of Oz," pronouncing the Wicked Witch of the East dead: "As coroner, I must aver. I thoroughly examined her. And she's not merely dead. She's really, most sincerely dead!"
It was brief but it opened doors, he told The Times-Union in 2007.
"Twelve seconds and I made a living at it ever since," he said.
He was referring to his three decades working as a spokesman and salesman for Oscar Mayer, where he was known as "Little Oscar, World's Smallest Chef." In that job, Mr Raabe frequently traveled in the Weinermobile.
After moving to Northeast Florida with his wife, Marie, who died in a 1997 automobile accident, Mr. Raabe made frequent appearances at "Wizard of Oz" festivals and events.
"He just loved being around children," said Cindy Bosnyak, a long-time friend and travel companion in recent years.
He also liked being around other "little people," such as his fellow Munchkins, and hoped he was an inspiration to them, Bosnyak said.
In 2007 he was one of six Munchkins who went to Los Angeles to be honored with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. Last September he was one of five Munchkins who went to New York for a 70th anniversary celebration of the beloved movie.
Mr. Raabe was born and raised in Watertown, Wis., the grandson of German immigrants.
As a young man, he put himself through college by working at the Chicago Fair and developed the habit of reading constantly, he told Bosnyak.
"He was a man with a head full of hair and he had everything upstairs," she said. "... He was a walking history book."
In 2005, the published a memoir, "Memories of a Munchkin: An Illustrated Walk Down the Yellow Brick Road," coauthored by Daniel Kinske.
Mr. Raabe earned master's degrees in horticulture and in accounting, taught German as a substitute teacher and was a pilot with the Civil Air Patrol during World War II, she said.
Bosnyak said Mr. Raabe's remains will be cremated and returned to Watertown where his only surviving relative, a sister, Marion Ziegelman, lives.
A memorial service will be in Clay County May 1 at a time and place to be determined.

Lydon leads tributes to punk mogul

Malcolm McLaren at the NME Awards at the Mermaid Theatre in Central London.

Sex Pistol John Lydon paid tribute to the band's former manager Malcolm McLaren, who has died aged 64.
The punk rock pioneer died on Thursday in a Swiss hospital after losing a battle with cancer.
Frontman Lydon, who fell out with McLaren in a rift over royalties, issued a tribute signed Johnny Rotten, the name he used while in the Sex Pistols.
Lydon, who is in the US where he is due to start a tour with his band PiL, said: "For me Malc was always entertaining, and I hope you remember that. Above all else he was an entertainer and I will miss him, and so should you."
Young Kim, McLaren's partner of 12 years, Joe Corre, his son with the designer Dame Vivienne Westwood, and his stepson Ben Westwood were at his side when he died of mesothelioma.
Dame Vivienne told the Daily Mail McLaren was "a very charismatic, special and talented person".
Mr Corre, who founded the lingerie brand Agent Provocateur, said funeral arrangements were not yet made but his father wanted to be buried in Highgate Cemetery, north London.
The New York Dolls - the US band McLaren briefly managed before launching The Sex Pistols - also paid tribute, with lead singer David Johansen saying: "He was the perfect preservation against stuffiness and a lack of humanity. We are going to miss him terribly."
The band will dedicate their classic song Jet Boy to McLaren when they play at London's Koko venue on Monday, April 19.

Lynn Redgrave, an introspective and independent player in her family's acting dynasty who became a 1960s sensation as the unconventional title character of "Georgy Girl" and later dramatized her troubled past in such one-woman stage performances as "Shakespeare for My Father" and "Nightingale," has died. She was 67.
