Rio is on a look back at Berlin

The Olympic torch is carried into the Olympic Stadium during the opening ceremonies of the XI Olympic Games in Berlin on Aug. 1, 1936.

Banners of the 49 nations participating in the Games fly in one of the main squares in Berlin

Jesse Owens (far right) competes in one of his track and field events. Much to Hitler's dismay, the 1936 Olympics were Owens' Games — he won four gold medals, and in the space of 45 minutes, broke five world records and tied a sixth. Owens became a hero, even in Germany's Aryan nation.

Medal winners in the women's 100-meter dash. German bronze-medal winner Kathe Krauss gives the Nazi salute in front. American Helen Stephens (center) won the gold

Members of the U.S. rowing team, wearing Native American headdresses, watch their fellow athletes compete. The U.S. rowing team, from the University of Washington, were considered underdogs, but ended up beating out Germany and Italy to win the gold

The woman on the right, who came in third place, is the Polish athlete Stanisława Walasiewicz. The race winner was American Helen Stephens. It was suggested at the Olympics that both Stephens and Walasiewicz were male so the Olympic Committee performed a physical check on Stephens and Walasiewicz, concluding that they were both women. Many years later, in 1980 in Cleveland, Ohio, Walasiewicz was killed during an armed robbery. An autopsy showed that she possessed the Y chromosome, which is normally present only in male cells.

Also, it seems Adolph Hitler tried it in with the American athlete!

Stephens is quoted by Olympic historian David Wallechinsky about her post-race experience with Adolf Hitler. "He comes in and gives me the Nazi salute. I gave him a good, old-fashioned Missouri handshake," she said. "Once more Hitler goes for the jugular vein. He gets hold of my fanny and begins to squeeze and pinch, and hug me up. And he said: You're a true Aryan type. You should be running for Germany.' So after he gave me the once over and a full massage, he asked me if I'd like to spend the weekend in Berchtesgaden." Stephens, who was closeted, refused.
