A bar eh?! What a novel idea! In Bangers too! Count me in. You don't think the market for establishments that sell beer and women is a bit saturated in Bangers? I guess you've done a lot of market research...

So Cap. how had Kanchanaburi changed when you went back and was it an odd experience?

I went there a couple of weeks ago (for the first time) and it was all a bit dead at night (well in the backpackers area) - couldn't really see people getting away with smoking the old ganga etc...

I went to a bar called 'No name bar - get shitfaced on a shoestring!' - looked ok at 6pm but by drinking time it was deserted!

So was it sad to go back and were there any 'old faces' that you recognised - also what's become of the bar now?

Cheers mate, I enjoyed writing the account. Thanks MeMock.

So Cap. how had Kanchanaburi changed when you went back and was it an odd experience?
Yes mate it had changed a lot and we were just talking about this today as it goes. When I returned to Kan after them 8 years I counted 41 bars that had opened on the main Thanom. Most with gals giving it large "Hello, come in, sit down." All competing for a dollar that hadnt increased in the same way. Sad.

I went there a couple of weeks ago (for the first time) and it was all a bit dead at night (well in the backpackers area) - couldn't really see people getting away with smoking the old ganga etc...
Sadly, I have to agree with you. Kan aint Pattaya. Never will be.

I went to a bar called 'No name bar - get shitfaced on a shoestring!' - looked ok at 6pm but by drinking time it was deserted!
I got banned from that gaff CE. My crime? Telling the dozy English owners that they were both fokwits. Long story.

So was it sad to go back and were there any 'old faces' that you recognised - also what's become of the bar now?
Sure I was sad to see how had it had evolved but progress is measured with different rulers.

When I opened my pub I had no competition and enjoyed being able to avail a clean estabishment to any of the many backpackers who had found Kanchanaburi.
Yuppers, there are still some famliar faces there in Kan and I am looking forward to getting back up there and chewing the fat over old times with mates that I still value highly.

I loved my time in Kan but I am also very aware of the fact that I benefiitted from leaving that town and getting on with my life.

Kanchanaburi will always be very special to me.

Not sure if it was the same owners there in your time but they pissed me off a little.

Basically I was just walking past with a can in my hand and the owner started talking to me on the street - in about 30 secs time the barmaid hussled me to buy a drink and come in. So , ok to be polite I left my half drunk can on the side and entered the bar and bought one of their beers - so my can just got wasted and was left.
Fair enough - I then proceeded to chat to the owner for half hour or so. Then I left and paid for the beer that I had bought there but the cheeky fucking Thai wife wanted me to pay for my own un-drunk half can as well - like some kind of corkage charge.

I wasn't having any of that and to be fair the owner (English) told her to forget about it - but that's a reason for me not to go back there again.

So I had a reasonable chat with the owner then the wife tries to stiff me - wankers.

You just did old boy. Hows Arnhem Land? Its getting fokking hot here mate.

Her name was Rebecca if I remember correctly. She had had a dalliance with another backpacker in Samui as I understand it. A little confused but otherwise fine. I comforted her.

    She was very noisy though.

    Why do they do that?

    Great post,Captain.
I lived in LOS for a while in the late seventies and I never went to kanchanaburi.
I finally went a few months ago in september 2005 on a day trip from BKK,it was fantastic.
A lovely region with a shocking past.
I am a student of WW2 history and collect military history books and I know all about the railway,I shed a few tears at the commonwealth cemetry in town.
The train ride back down from about 20ks north was great, this was the regular wooden rattler to bangkok-a lot like an old queensland train, bloody slow.
We went over viaducts built on the side of the cliffs alongside the river opposite the thai party boats on the other side.
The gorge north of the town is incredible,I looked down from the carriage at the construction of the viaducts. They had been rebuilt since the war,but I saw many pieces of timber used that weren't dressed and were the timbers that the prisoners produced with axes.
It is a really nice area pyhsically and you were a missionary, bruvva.
Well done, someone had to do it.

    Great read. thank you gentlemen.
You'll be happy to know the Jungle Bar lives on, in name. it has moved to what we call cake corner. Out on the main road opposite the waterworks. H still owns the place and he is doing OK. I remember the old Jungle Bar and it had a decent rap for food as well as ambiance. And it was dead cheap. Kan has changed alot since those days. There are now 50 bars and small Thai restaurants on the main tourist drag now. There;s even an Indian.
