The first one Mendy
The first one Mendy
Fucked if I can be arsed to do the last one. Just keep adding more to the top line and changing the following two and you will get there.
It's not too far away already. Its at the 1936 and you have to get it to 2080
The easiest way to explain how to do those would be to start with the total and the three names then start guestimating til you hit the right figure.
Here's my workings out of that first one and how I got there and in how many sums it took.
Here you go. The second sum
Question 21
Daniel is 3x
Angela is x
Stanley is x – 33
(3x) + (x) + (x-33) = 2062
3x + x + x = 2062 + 33 = 2095
5x = 2095
X = 419
419 – 33 = 386
Stanley has $386.
Check (3 x 419) + 419 + 419 – 33 = 2062
^ wish you'd have shown up an hour ago
That's great, thanks mate.
I'll check it out when I get back to the hotel later. It's going to be hard to explain this one to her...
Green sent!
Question 23
Ben is 2x
Jayson is x
Dorothy is x + 236
(2x) + (x) + (x+236) = 2080
2x + x + x = 2080 - 236 = 1844
4x = 1844
X = 461
461 + 236 = 697
Dorothy has $697.
Check (2 x 461) + 461 + 461 + 236 = 2080
And Barty, thanks very much! A green sent to you also!
Are these not a bit difficult for an 8 year old?
That's ridiculously hard for an 8-year old.
Anyway
1. The formula is 5x - 33 = 2062
5x = 2062 + 33
5x = 2095
x = 419
So Stanley has 419 minus 33 = 386
2. 4x + 236 = 4160
4x = 4160 - 236
4x = 3924
x = 981
Dorothy has 1x + 236 = 1217
Parryhandy, a green for effort to you also!
Although I think you should have only got half a one!
Unless she is in some sort of advanced class, this is way ahead of where an 8 year old would normally be at.
Also, you may want to check with her teacher how they want the answer formatted. My maths teacher in highschool may not have accepted the way I formatted my answers above.
I'm starting to wonder if it is a cheeky teacher checking to see how many parents are doing there kids homework for them???
I questioned the school before about the difficulty of some of the maths homework and the teacher said he throws in a few very hard ones to spot the exceptional pupils.
I think it more likely he is spotting the exceptional parents.
I won't give my daughter the answer but will show her how to approach a question (if I can figure that out). But I think these two are so difficult I'm happy for her to leave them unanswered. It will just confuse her further.
Many thanks for all the input.

Years ago I used to tutor students that were in Year11 high school in Australia and this was the sort of question they would be given. It wasn't high level maths students but just the very basic level.
The way I tried to explain this to them was to change their thinking. Instead of thinking they didn't know any of the answers i.e. what each person had, they had to assign a value to 1 of the people. And in general algebra that value would be "X". Once you do that then you can give a value (in terms of X) to the other people. From these numbers and for example 3X is a number (you just don't know the exact value as yet). Once you write down the equation you can solve for X. Barty, in post #5555 and #5558 nailed it
Given all that I believe if your daughter can grasp that at 8 you might have a prodigy on your hands.
What I believe you really need to teach her is that she should be scared of problem because she doesn't know any of the numbers and to solve 1 by assigning an unknown variable "X"
Tough to unfair for an 8-yr-old in Thailand, looks about right for Korea/Singapore where they have higher expectations, which means an absolute no-no at Brit primary where everyone's a winner and doesn't matter if you're the 14th winner from 15 you still get a fcuking medal.
btw thanks for the methodology, wouldn't have needed it 50 years ago but never since needed to know the value of x.
My daughters homework is not as hard as that. Normally takes me two minutes
Can't hurt to show her that quick way of doing it though after showing her the way I went about it at first
The problem with healthy breakfasts is I'm hungry 30 mins later and need to hit up the local bakery. #fvckoatmeal
Fuk me, this maths is boring... moan, moan, moan...
All you need for breakfast is a couple of intenssio shots and a large lungio with extra milk froth...
Dunno if this a moan or a criticism. Was in the local village hospital at 1pm today. No treatment being given as the majority of nurses were still on their unofficial extended lunch break. No sooner than they returned at 1:20 an emergency vehicle arrived, lights blazing, with a man inside. The place was in turmoil as the nurses hadn't put their handbags down or returned to their posts.
Anyways this unconscious injured man was roughly manhandled onto a trolley. Then they rushed him up a small incline towards the treatment room. Unfortunately they took the trolley diagonal to the incline resulting in him rolling off and hitting the floor with a tremendous thud. Did they administer any kind of first aid on the spot? Nah they just picked him up like a piece of shit and threw him back on the trolley. Rant over. Bunch of twats.
^ do they Thai police receive any basic first aid training? Indeed, do the Thai police receive any training at all?
