    Arrest Warrants

A bloke I met recently told me he would like to go back to Thailand but is worried he will be arrested.

Apparantly on his last trip two years or so ago he got into an argument with three Thai guys who tried to rip him off (surprise, surprise) and ended with them getting beaten up rather badly.

He was there for 2 more days and nothiong happened but he is concerned he'll be locked up when / if he returns.

Is there any where he can go to find out of there is a warrant pending?

I doubt it but thought if anyone will know, it's the Teakdoor clan.

It probably depends on how well connected and moneyed the Thai fellows are.
It costs money to make the wheels of justice turn.
While someone could make an inquiry with the police or whoever might have some info, on his behalf, though it's probably best to let sleeping dogs lie.
As long as no one was killed the statute of limitations will kick in soon enough.

Two years is fairly long time, but if he returns it would be wise to avoid the places he frequented previously.
Discretion would be the better part of valor I reckon.

If he never gave his passport number to anyone they've got nothing.

Even if he did, just get a new passport as it'll have a different number.

Getting a new passport may not be the most clever idea.

Passport databases are everywhere these days, and I imagine the Thai entry/exit database at Suvarnabhumi would have no problem matching by name/DOB, especially if there's an outstanding warrant.

Also, if a passport is reported lost/stolen/damaged, you'll go through *more* scrutiny when crossing borders in the future. Not sure exactly how they know, but I have a friend who replaced his passport twice (one stolen, one washed/ripped), and they often ask him questions at airport immigration.

The best way may be to contact a lawyer to check for existence of the warrant (presumably with Thai Immigration).

In the end, I think if the guys who tried ripping him off are lowly enough to get their hands dirty fighting with a Farang (as opposed to paying a goon or two), they may not have the wherewithal to get him blacklisted / arrest warrant issued (it probably takes some money and influence, and what are they getting in return?).

If he is English, he can change his name by Deed Poll and get a new passport
