    Clarification about working

Ok, so I've read this thread https://teakdoor.com/thailand-and-asia-news/65331-pattaya-italian-arrested-working-without-permit.html (Pattaya - Italian arrested for working without permit)
& from reading the contents it would appear that what I want to do constitutes working in Thailand, but it's likely to be ok if I don't do it in Pattaya?

What I intend doing is doing some accounting work for my NZ clients, from time to time, whilst I'm in Thailand. The work will be done on my laptop & payment for my services will be into my NZ bank a/c. The only thing Thai involved is the internet connection & the physical location.

If the bib want to examine my laptop not only are they likely to find accounting software but a program that's used for betting on the NSW TAB (horse racing).

So am I working if I pursue these activities?

To hide these softwares you could run them from a virtual machine in your laptop. I don't think the average BIB inspecting your laptop will know what is it when not running.

They have no way of finding out if ya keep your mouth shut. They need a warrant to enter your house and the only way they are going to know is if you start telling everybody. Doubt they would be bothered anyway, would only be a problem if someone high up wants you to have a problem.

Guess I'm just a little paranoid. I wouldn't tell anyone, but don't know if I could say the same for the g/f. She also has relatives in the police so I don't know if that's a good thing or a bad thing. Maybe the police thing deserves a thread on it's own 555.
The virtual machine appeals to the paranoid part of me though...

I have just started doing consulting work from my house via computer and skype.

I am not going to get w.p. and anyone from the Thia government can drop dead.

    Don't worry, be happy.

The BIB can't prove anything. The average Thai does not know that farangs need work permits, so it does not matter who knows.

Chances of you being caught are very slim.
Being dobbed in by some jealous friend is another matter.

Just keep it secret and you should be safe.
Don;t tell the GF if she has a big mouth

Having a GF with relatives in the police is taking a chance. Great if everything goes well between you and her, but ......you know the rest. Apparently it's causing you doubts already.

I really don't understand those paranoid threads.

Do you think you're the centre of the world? Do you think everybody hate you ?

Be real. Nobody give a damn about what you do until you piss someone off. Be nice with your neighbours and everything's going to be alright

Not any more with the new IT laws that came into effect recently. Now they can enter any premises without a warrant to search computers if they think those computers are being used in violation of said laws.

To answer the OP: you are not working for a Thai company and being paid by them so you don't need a work permit, however...

What you are doing constitutes doing business in Thailand and therefore technically you will require a Non-Immigrant 'B' visa.

As others have said, I wouldn't concern myself, just be discrete and mind your own business.

    Nor do I.

You can even get a tax ID and pay Thai tax instead of NZ tax (if the rate is better here) and nobody would give a shit.

I just wanted to know & understand the official position before I decide how I go about doing what I want to do.

Yes there's an element of paranoia, but I wouldn't have got half the information, in the one place/thread, that I have now if I hadn't started this one. Ok maybe I could have Googled more, but posted here maybe it's of use to someone else also...

Unfortunately all the while I have a child support liability in NZ, the NZ IRD have their hooks into me. I will look into the Thai tax ID thing though to see if it can be worked in my favour - thanks for that.

I don't have doubts about her, just unsure of any benefits or not of her having family members as BIB.

I wouldn't call her a big mouth, but based on what she tells me about her family there's a possibility she may tell others what I'm doing thinking "it's no promplem"

Any apparently, not sure it was specified domestic or business but I stand to be corrected.
