    Tabien Baan, what the purpose

My wife got her own tabian baan when we finished building our house.

This morning she suggested she was going to put her four grown half-brothers on her tabian baan (to make things easier for them to vote, cheaper taxes etc etc)

I was adamant against it. Seriously adamant against it.

    Am I overreacting?

As far as I understand, a tabian baan lists the residences of a domicile. They're all grown adults and should get their own.

    What do you think?

Thais have to have a home address, tabian baan is just a house paper, my girlfriend and son are on the tabien baan of the place we rent.

But it's not your girlfriend's. It belongs to the owner of the house. It states who lives there.

They don't live here. For fuck's sake, they should grow up and be men for once in their lives. Always snaking around looking to be clever.

I don't like it. Something doesn't sit well with me. I said "no" after a lengthy discussion. In the end she'll do what she wants, it's her tabian baan -- but I've stated my position.

What rights does it give them if they're on it. I have a similar predicament looming, I think.

What if my wife kicks it someday and they can prove they've lived there for X years and have cleaned and worked and toiled and bled for the upkeep and ....

    I just don't like it.

I would not allow it. What have they done for you lately anyhow? If they do it, then charge them. They would squeeze some dosh out of you for the same thing for sure.

As stated, you don't have to live there to be on a tambien baan. Until my wife put herself on the tambien baan for our condo she was on her mother's upcountry one and she hasn't lived there in 20 years. Over half the population of Bangkok is on an upcountry tambien baan.
I don't see anything really wrong with your wife’s desire to put her half-brothers on hers. Do you see it has accepting some sort of responsibility for their actions? I can only think that by being on tambien baan of someone that is going to be there a long time, it would keep them from having get it changed everytime they move from one rented hovel to another.

I don't think you have anything to worry about Tex!

The Tabian Barn is just an official means to know where everyone is living at any given time.

The only real problem I foresee (and that is) if your brother-in-laws are into shady business you could have people arriving on your front door step trying to find them.

That would be my only concern and when considering my useless, worthless, lazy as fuck brother-in-laws!

Don't blame you Tex be afraid be very afraid.. smells fishy to me, what about a crime committed for example hit and run who knows? I can envision scenarios not worth the risk at all IMO

The main reason I'm reluctant to agree to it is because I don't know the legal ramifications of the owner of a house and those listed on the paper.

What if one of them has a car accident and kills a dozen children in a pickup?
Do I experience any exposure from lawyers looking for compensation because the twat lives in my house -- legally?

Dunno. I'm positive my wife hasn't thought through any of this either.

One of them has a wife and kid and another is getting married in April -- wonder if the whole village is invited? ... it's an evil, snowball.

It practically gives them the right to stay at the house.
You'd have no grounds to ask them to leave or evict them.
If it ever came to this.

That's why you should make sure your name is also on the Tabien Ban.

therefore if they aren't and something should happen then your perjuring yourself and he's farang which already carries a different set of laws here anyway..Why take that chance?

So if their name is on the tabian baan -- they have a RIGHT to stay there.

    Hmmmm.

I get along fine with all of them. Today.

Yeah I was concerned about that too, if it ever came down to a real family confrontation they have the rights with their names on the Tabien Baan over you without.. Thai or not, but especially being Thai..

    nasty scenarios all around..

"Practically" - it only matters if things go tits up, of course.
But you might be well adviced to disappear voluntarily if that happens anyway.

But my advice to get your name on it stands, how often do we hear of a farang being charged with tresspassing when collecting his own house during or after marital crisis?

If that's the case they, our potential "visitors" can get foked. Visitors at our discretion, ok. Legal right to stay, no way.

They would have to vote at the polling booth nearest your house
If they don't live there then how does it make it easier ?
Cheaper taxes? I haven't heard that one before.

Why suddenly do it for all four of them, all at the same time?
Does she have a will? who are the benefactors?

Tex, do you have any lease in place ensuring your use of that house and land for 30 years?

What are the benefits to you of having these 4 names in that book?

She does not have a will.
Working on getting the 30-year lease.
No benefit to me -- not sure how it might benefit them.
