I Haven't done it for a long time, but I used to go to Vientaine and get a tourist visa like the one I had got at home and then do the 2 months, do the 30 day addon and then go back to Laos for a 3 day vacation and come back here for 3 months,, shit a lot of guys did that as a way to get away from the ol lady every 3 months.. I see nothing wrong with that deal if you do not have or want to get a long stay.

I agree but if he has no back up due to his age and illness arises then he's in trouble. 6 months out of the UK exempts one from privilages.
    no it doesn't.

Wouldn't fancy that at any age though. I'd make a bit more money than you have before moving out here.
I agree, but if you put the effort in, at any age, you'll be alright

Understand (vaguely) after the extension visas, 90 days etc. one has to leave the country for 3 months. Only bright side is ex girlfriend in England says she will invest in condo for me (in her name of course). Cheers

Have you thought about what you will do when you get sick. ?

One thing about Thailand mate, if you ain't got money you got fok all , unfortunately you ain't got much of that considering you are 65.

Just make sure you got an air tight insurance policy and a gaff to go back to if you have to leave Thailand in a hurry and you'll be sweet.

    Good luck.

    Difficult choice to make.

65 years old and not much capital.
You might live for another 15 years or it might only be 7
You can live in UK and be miserable for 15 years and bemoan the retirement that you always promised yourself or you can come to Thailand and be happy for 7 years.

I know which one I would choose .

    Yep,

You are 100% correct but that still don't negate the fact that one must have some sort of back up if one gets really sick.

I'm talking stroke, heart attack and all those good things that happen to us fellas when we get old.

Its OK in Australia and the Old Blighty as the health system will throw you a life line but you will die in Thailand without health cover or a shit load of money in the bank.

Not a problem if you drop dead but if you are disabled one is in seriously deep shit without a pile of money to pay your way.

Anyway. Just tuning this dude into the reality of living in Thailand with piss all to fall back on.

Up to him to make the call.

I think you will be ok KWAN. Give it a go for 6 months then rethink. Use your income and maintain your savings. Will you be able to maintain a place to return to in England.

Also, check into travel insurance to cover points made by terry57, one of those policies for transporting you back home if you get really sick.

Got to have a contingency escape plan for sure. One thing for certain when you get older is that you are going to get sick sooner or later. It can happen at any age but risks increase with age, thats why the insurance companies don't want to touch oldies. As Thetyim said, you can have a much better quality of life for available money in Thailand, but the trade off is that there is no health care safety net if and when you get sick. That's something you have to organize for yourself and should be a fundamental part of anyones planning for retirement in Thailand.

With all due respect, 800,000 Baht for the retirement visa is a very small amount of money, especially for someone in their 60s.

Perhaps you should work another year, save $1,667 per month which X 12 months = $20,000 USD and then come on the retirement-O.

Vientiene is nice, I don't know about three months there but if I was 60 I suppose it would be just what the doctor ordered.

That is very sound advice. If there's no 'readies' in the handbag. one simply cannot afford the risk in case of the onset of an expensive illness. It is cash
and carry here. Same same as the west.

Yea, lots have heard of it, but as you get older the ones selling it just quit selling it to you.
They do have a max age at which they will insure you, same as any country, and thats what retirement is about, Older people quitting working and setting on their ass and not going to work no more,, thats what some call retirement.

I would avoid Mindanao in the Phils

I would agree there are many places in the Phils to visit cheaply, Cebu, Davao and Angelels City if you want to do some whoring.
But I would avoid the south and Mindanao can be dangerous for people unfamiliar with the area.
