    Foreign worker fee relaxation

    For your information:

    Foreign worker fee relaxation

Employers can now register foreign workers without immediately submitting a money guarantee of Bt10,000 or Bt50,000 per head.

A panel is currently reviewing whether the guarantees are excessive.

Employment Department director-general Chuthatawat Indrasuksri yesterday said if a reduction was approved, his agency would return money already posted by employers.
Employers can register their foreign workers until March 30, at which time authorities will launch a crackdown on those still unregistered. Both unregistered workers and their employers will be subject to legal punishment after March 30. Upon registration employers must pay Bt3,800 in fees relating to medical check-ups, health-insurance and licensing.
Chuthatawat said the review of the registration fees had come about because so many employers complained about the costs. - The Nation

I think this relates to the tourist teacher shopping prizes I reported on a few weeks ago. Same dates, anyway, but nothing about the bounties here.

Burmese, English, American, no difference as far as immigration is concerned; they are all working here illegally, and not welcome.

Don't you think though that some are less welcome than others??

I wouldn't know, but legally neither are. Are you hinting that Westerners are more welcome for some reason?

Economically, they are probably on a par too, as both provide a service unavailable from the indigenous population (be it very cheap manual labour or English language modelling). However, I suspect that immigration would prefer to remove the Westerners, as this would free up some jobs for indigenous English language teachers, who at this time may be very willing to work for 30k but are not given a chance, hence opt for other careers. Whether this would reduce the level of language learning is another issue, and is not the primary concern of immigration officials.

Clearly, immigration is still extremely slackregarding those working illegally.
Up here in CM, I know people who have done monthly visa runs for years. Does immigration really believe they are not working to support themselves??
Retirees seem entirely welcome as long as they have enough money in the bank too.
One of my best friends is a Burmese girl, she's lived in Thailand since she was 5 or 6...most people believe she is Thai, she also speaks Engkish like a native English speaker. the last time I saw her she had her nose stuck in an english version of "Nehru's autobiography". One of the most articulate people I know working totally illegally as a waitress and constantly in fear of being booted out of the country. Can't see them letting her back in from the Mae Sai border should she ever want to visit hewr family.

If the bounty story was accurate, I think this lack of motivation will be changing very soon.

I wouldn't want to be an illegal teacher with an entire life based in Thailand right now, but then I'd never be stupid and short-sighted enough to let myself be in that position.

The way I read the quoted law, it makes it easier and cheaper for EMPLOYERS of foreigners to register their workers.

I suspect it's aimed at rich Thai's with Burmese maids and Thais owners of English Language Company/Schools. If I'm right, this law will, indirectly, actually make it easier for a qualified English Teacher to get a Work Permit!
