Overstay charge hiked to B500 a day

PHUKET: The fine for remaining in Thailand past the expiry date of a permit to stay, currently 200 baht a day, will rise to 500 baht a day with effect from March 15.

However, the maximum fine payable will remain the same, at 20,000 baht, Pol Lt Gen Suwat Thamrongsrisakul, Commander of the Immigration Bureau, stated in a document posted in Thai on the Bureau’s website. The document gave no reason for the increase.

I'm bloody sure this is in some part due to the Ranong fiasco.

Someone in dark brown must have thought "Jail or 200 baht - ding dong! Lets make it 500!"

    Fair enough.

I guess you wouldn't get away with a 3 quid fine if you overstayed your visa in the UK.

in theory it's easy but situations sometimes arise that stop you from leaving on time.

Saw this, this morning on Thorn Tree, and got it delivered by e mail via Thai visa. Pretty hot story right about now. lt also crossed my mind that this was prompted by the Ranong fiasco, although it hardly makes any sense. Then again, common snse has never stopped Thai authorities before.

Nothing. I did it in 2004. They put a warning sticker on my passport, but that was it. Maybe I got lucky.

EDIT: Actually, now that I think about it, I'm not sure if it was an overstay. They gave me 60 days, and told me to get a resident visa. Never did, but left the country anyway, came back a week later and was almost deported back to the US. I just forget how long I stayed before leaving the first time.

99.8% of them are self imposed. Like the tosser on tv that admitted it wasnt worth his while to get an extension so just overstayed.

It doesnt take that much planning to get either a 60 visa or go out a few days ahead of the stamp expiry
You dont pay them to stay for the night, you pay them to leave in the morning

The only time I ever had an overstay was when my son was born, I had a 5 day overstay, do you really think at that time that I gave a fok about the thai law? or the 500baht fine?
