I went through process of getting a settlement visa five years back. It took six applications, and eventually two letters from my MP, a letter from the Minister, and an awful lot of time and money.

We had to show that we'd spent 350 days together (ie passport stamps, letters, phone records going back to show we'd spoken every day on the phone, evidence basically that we hadn't just met in a bar etc).
Evidence that she is going to be able to settle in UK seems to be a major part of their agenda too.

Before you apply I strongly recommend that you speak with a decent immigration lawyer - after one rejection it becomes much more difficult, so its really worth getting it right first time.
    Good luck!

And even with following the rules and providing validated documentation, there is no guarantee... good luck!

You do not have to show youve spent 350 days together, nor do you need an immigration lawyer. You need to show youve met at least more than once. Provide 6 months bank statements, wage slips, photos and a description of your home to show you can accommodate and pay for her stay (As she cant work until your married). Submit evidence of all contact, e.g phone records (mobile and landline), photos of your time together. Show divorce papers
if youve been married before, birth certificates, copy of passport page to show how many times youve been, etc etc. With a little hard work you do all this yourself, without having to pay extortionate fees to a lawyer. For more concise information and a step by step guide to building your own settlement visa, visit Thailand-UK Website. Youll get all the info you need there.

    Good luck
