If he sneaks out the country with no Passport, hes then illegal in the other country, will they then send him back to Thailand and then face further charges.

so you are a thief and a fraud, and a not very clever one at that.1-5 years. Plus harming someone through use of a document, using an electronic card with bad intent, and make a fake document. (I found and used my ex girlfriends atm card). 14 years for 5000 baht, even my lawyer thought it was crazy, but im just glad I was given bail.
knowing you would be caught, and that you have potential health issues, why on earth didnt you didnt skip the country when you had the chance?
if the evidence is as damning as you say then your best (only) option would be to plead guilty and hope for a lenient sentence, after the recent bombing and security scares in thailand i would imagine the borders are as tight as they are ever going to be. there was some guy a while ago who escaped by sea to malaysia, but what the hell are you going to do should you make it to there.
... and yes, your lawyer does seem to have stitched you up.
as a thief you brought the whole thing down on yourself, as i'm sure you realise, so it is hard to feel much sympathy, but at least you are not in saudi arabia.

Get a new lawyer.
Ask about compensation to the ex.
See if he can make it go away.
Rent a jetski on Ko Chang and make a dash for Cambo if KW's suggestion doesnt work

Best suggestion so far is to check with a pliable immigration bobbo if you are on the stop list.
i loke the jetski one but otherwise you should probably do your time and be grateful for the free thai language lessons
Yeah sure, its my fault. I'm not looking for sympathy. It was a dumb thing to do. I have a decent salary and no need to take 5000 baht. In fact, after I did it, I panicked and threw the thing away. So I gained literally nothing.
I didnt leave immediately after because I figured the police wouldnt care about such a small thing. When I was being stalked by a different ex, they wouldnt even write up a report. I dont know, there's no good reason why i did it or stayed.
ChiangMai noon: True, my Thai improved more during 1 week in Klong Prem than all the past year combined.
Theft is criminal not civil which is quite worrying.
Fact of the matter do you have money to pay yourself out of this?
I would suggest you also find another lawyer and if you need a good contact PM me.
Also what is your country of origin? More often then not your heritage has some bearing in these cases.
And DO NOT DO A RUNNER...........The consequences and if you are caught are worse then the crime you have already committed.
I'm British. Got some supporting docs prepared like charity work I did, my empty UK criminal record, decent job reference, and doctors letter about the xanax I take. To show I'm not normally such an asshole.
My understand is a guilty plea halves the max sentence. Which would leave me with 6.5 max, still 1 minimum for theft at night. Hopefully those docs plus agreeing to pay compensation would bring it down further? But thats totally up to the judge.
My lawyer seems optimistic about getting 1-3 years probation. But a quick google shows zero cases of a foreigner ever getting that.
Pm me if you want contact in Cambo to offer advice on border crossing
Strong walking shoes an advantage :-)

As KW said, get a proper lawyer. Offer to pay your ex more than she lost. Suggest it to the lawyer, but try and arrange a face-to-face meeting with the lawyer and your ex if possible to avoid bartering between your ex and the lawyer.
Doing a runner is plain stupid. If you're caught, your totally fecked!
You bullied, you laughed, you lied, you lost!
A bit late now but you need to nip these things in the bud right away, before even thinking of a lawyer. The more plod involved the more it will cost you.
I wouldn't try skipping the country as many on here are telling you. I doubt that will be as easy to do now after the bombing and a news article I read this morning about the Malaysian traffickers charging 700 ringgit to let people into Malaysia.
If I were you I'd try and get someone to get in touch with your ex, give her a backhander and get her to drop the charges, as JJ says
pretending to be regretful, paying compensation to the victim and a bribe to the police is the way things are done in thailand. The police see their job as licensing and managing crime rather then preventing it.
for a station commander deals like this are their bread and butter, half of the bribe you pay will be sent to the station commanders boss.... and so on all the way to the top. The station commands performance will be judged on how much money they send up and they all need this money to buy their promotions.
To welch on a deal, particularly in the presence of a lawyer is to destroy the trust that earns them the bribes. I would be surprised if this were to happen. Personally I would suspect that you lawyer is far too honest, naive or far too much of a criminal lawyer. which ever it is you need a new one.
perhaps some of our more dubious members can recommend a suitably criminal lawyer for the chap. I cannot as Ive been rather careful and lucky enough not to need one.
The problem you have now, is that the thai justice system is all about keeping the poor in their place and the rich safe from them. Therefore property crime and particularly at night time is in sentencing terms one of the more serious crimes you can commit, particularly if you are poor. By not dealing with this at the station you have simply told everyone you are poor. and if that is the case throwing yourself to the mercy of the court could be a rather bad decision.... there is/was a scouser who stole a bottle of suntan lotion from boots at night... the mercy she got was 4 years.
From what I have seen, from court reporting, is that if one can demonstrate one is not poor, one can get away with rather a lot. This starts be demonstrating that you can pay your bail and lawyers fees.... irrespective of the evidence you plead not guilty, appeal every guilty judgement and miss court dates as appropriate. you can spin the case out for 8 years... whilst you get one with your life free from worrying about visas. Once the 8 years is up and you have run out of appeals you will end up in jail... but thats 8 years you can spend planning your future.
This last bits important as an essex man found out in pattaya for arrested for statutory rape, got bail and ddi the appeal thing. even worked out he could carry on with the rapes and arrests.... until that final appeal which finally sent him to jail after 8+ years of child rape. saw him on TV complaining that his sentence at his age as a life term. So as you can see with money you can get away with rather a lot in thailand.
what can you do. well the courts will more or less let you do what you could have done in the station. compensate the victims, pay a bribe and get a suspecndence sentence.... rather like the chap who likes to murder people with his merc ( a suspended sentence after 10 years of appeals). Problem is you need a criminal lawyer who can credibly bribe as needed and you need to be able to pay a much bigger bribe.
or you could spend the next 8 years planning and waiting for the right time to leave.
The best advice I can give you is take up Loy Toy's offer. Though a contract dispute, rather than anything criminal. he and his lawyers got him some real justice in the courts fighting thai's no less

An interesting mix of suggestions with roughly half saying do a runner and the other half saying bribe the system
^What's another option? Let "Thai justice" run its course? That will work blindingly well.
Henrie
Thats how it works here.
if your wealthy bribe the system, do a runner
if you too poor to do the first two, face some very harsh music
if you don't like any of those three options, you only option is the avoid being sucked into the thai justice system. my personal choice
I can well believe it hazz. Scary stuff. I'll be keeping myself whiter than white!
I'm thinking alcohol was behind this story. That stuff can get expensive.
All kinds of stupid was behind this story. Doing it in the first place, stupid. Thinking that b5000 is a small amount in Thailand, stupid, Hanging around to be caught, stupid. Letting a Thai lawyer milk of the last of his money before going inside, stupid.
At least his Thai will improve after a spell in the monkey house.
It wasn't me!
