    Sunbelt Asia

    Afternoon,
I'm in discussions with the British owners of a Bangkok based business ( education sector). I'm looking for a company to help with brokering the deal, due diligence etc. I was wondering if anybody has experience of commissioning Sunbelt Asia, were they any good, what were their fees like ?
    Cheers

You're not going to get an honest answer about a group of lawyers and accountants on a public forum in Thailand.... well not my honest opinion of them.

Depending upon how big the deal is, use a proper legal firm.

Okay thanks Pseudolus, any recommendations ( rather than opinions) regarding a proper legal firm.

All mod cons, do you have a Thai wife/partner.

I would suggest you research the laws before doing anything, the more you know yourself the better in regard of charges.

Well yes if the OP wants to pay more in legal fees than the purchase price of the business

Oh, do not use a certain legal firm whose name will be familar to readers of TD. they are fucking useless.

I contacted them years ago from Phuket regarding a condo purchase, and they referred me me to lawyer who couldn't even speak English. Since they are still in business they must be better now!

Due diligence EH. Come over and have a look. Stay a while and get the pulse of the place, look at a number of competitors.

Asking any lawyer to act for you that you nothing about seems a little lax. This is Asia after all, not Kansas, Dorothy. Too many Munchkins here.

    Thank you for the replies.
Necron 99 I'll take a look at baker and McKenzie, likewise the link Yasojack-and yeas my wife is Thai.
OhOh, thank you for taking the time to comment, I had just a simple question and didn't really want to bore people with the ins and outs of it. I've been travelling to and from Thailand for close on thirty years and lived there for ten years returning to the UK in 2007. I've spent the last three years scoping out opportunities and I believe I have a pretty good insight into the sector and the organisations operating within it. I was here in August and spent some time embedded in the business working alongside the current owners. I've taken it's pulse, I believe it's a viable prospect. What I'm looking for is some professional local expertise to help me drill down into the detail before I part with any money. I was simply canvassing for the opinion of people who may have experience of, in the first instance Sunbelt Asia, not to do so would be very lax indeed don't you think?
    Thanks again for the replies.
    :-)

Doubt very much that AD would be giving anyone 'space' if they weren't up to it.

I asked an experienced successful farang legal guy here in Pattaya the same question last night and he didn't hesitate to nominate Baker and McKenzie.

He also claimed they are the only legal firm who can win a case for a foreigner here in Thailand.

If it were me and I had spent such time as you have claimed in analysis of the business you hope to buy and I still needed help to " drill down " into further detail before reaching a decision I'd be tempted to conclude the business wasn't for me.

Paying someone to borrow your watch to tell you the time might satisfy some but ........

Sounds to me you know already the business isn't for you but you are not trusting your instincts.

    Walk away from it.

Baker & McKenzie are good at civil litigations, it's true. But the OP only requires a straightforward conveyancing practice.
