I asked an "experienced successful farang legal guy" here in Pattaya blah-blah-blah.. He also claimed they are the only legal firm who can win a case for a foreigner here in Thailand..
Ahh, that old wive's tale about foreigners going thru the legal system here not getting a fair shake raises its head again!

That's so often repeated and yet I've seen foreigners win case after case here. It is my experience that the legal system/courts here aren't really out to screw anyone over and try to dispense a judgement in line with what ever law you're arguing.

Now, the better you are equipped to navigate the thai court system (ie; speak, understand, read Thai) the better the odds are in your case. Still I've seen people who can't speak a word 'o thai come away with judgements against thaiz in cases. It just depends on who represents you.

I'd tell the O/P to take free consultations at all the top firms here and see which one appears dialed in to contract law where purchasing a business is concerned.

The reason you don't hear too many horror stories about ANY Thai law firm out on the inter-web is; given the broad interpretation of "libel law" in this country, even if what someone said was 100% true and factual, IF the business imagined their livelihood was impacted negatively by the story they could have a claim against the person who wrote it.

On what basis? Were you interested in a joint venture business with Sunbelt? Curious?

I think the real reason is that most ex-pats don't use law firms. Not that they're afraid of libel laws. Many ex-pats have been screwed by Thai lawyers as well as co-owned thai-ex-pat law firms, myself included.

Company formations is the source of many sub-representative elements of the Thai legal system. Formation is pretty straight forward, however disoloution becomes very tricky and very expensive.

If an ex-pat is going into a business venture in Thailand he needs to know not only what it takes to obtain the business, but what it takes to retain the business operation, (tax laws, employee responsibilities under Thai law, and lastly closing costs and obligations.), once you have all these facts mastered, you may wish to remain in the UK and forget opening a Thai business. BTW, the Thai business laws are not in the ex-pats favor.

Agre with above in th ecurious legal framework her eits is illegal to point out crime even if true f it disparages, esp true if taking face/cash which overlap from poo yais.

I can cite 2 examples of foreigners I knew who were killed .This a lawless society deep down and I would discourage anyone from investing funds they cannot 100% write off.Plus lack of security, exchange rate and racist immigration laws.
How can you be sure you will be allowed to live operate here in a decade?
That alone deters investors should you ever wish to sell.Retirement, vacation is one thing in corrupt tird world kleptocracies trying to run an honest business well.

You do understand your competitors may well be local mafias crooks .

As someone who has had the pleasure of successfully suing UK lawyers I spurn them all as I would a rabid dog.In jurisdictions with just laws, honest judges and a responsive investigative free press maybe ,here...
An example of local practice a convicted murderer is practicing lawyer.
    I believe.

Bill padding and sheer incompetence reveal some of the so called legal parctices and there and a quick legal search will.

It is llegal for me to name the guilty which just about says all you need to know re lack of due dilligence and enforcement.l as well as the handling of the present high profile murders in terms of calumny, abuse of process, mafia,

Well said and should never be forgotten.

Lots of friendly faces here when you start up, lots of greedy and jealous faces if you get successful.

Said it before, if I get arrested I'll go to a criminal lawyer, if it's business, use an accountant.
We have had the same guy [company] from day one, over 6 years, never a problem.
They handle it all, taxes etc and not expensive as it's on going.
