    Another dual passport question.....

    Something struck me last night.

We are off to the USA next week.

My wife has 2 passports, Thai in Thai name, UK with my surname.

To get the travel approval my wife must have her tickets in the name of her UK Passport so the airline can see that she is approved to travel to the USA without a visa.

That means her boarding pass will have her UK name.

When she leaves through Thai immigration her boarding pass will not match the name on the passport. Now that has happened before, eg leaving Dubai recently when her boarding pass had her Thai name and the passport she showed had her UK name.

Never done it going out of Thailand before..... gonna be an issue at all?

Production of the other passport may answer any questions...but.
I don't think you are supposed to have two legal identities...it looks very dodgy and may raise more questions than it answers..
If she legally took your name in the UK she should also have changed it in thailand.

Nope, there is no legal requirement in Thailand for her to take my name, that we do know....

that said, just because that is law, it doesn't cover two identities......

Never been a problem from anyone else's standpoint, including the banks here, she's got accounts in both names as well...

Why does she not just leave Thailand on her UK passport - or am I missing something?

^^ banks aren't the ID police, they leave that to people like boarder police and immigration...

She doesn't legally have to take your name in the UK either, but once she has that should be her name everywhere.

Imagine if the coppers pulled you over for something and saw you had two valid IDs in two different names....questions, and unwanted attention.

She didn't enter on the UK, so can't leave on it.

She can't leave on the UK.

I have been given an easy solution, use the automated queue where there is no one to look at the boarding pass.

    She cant unless she came in in the uk passport, which i doubt;

never ran into this but would think producing both passports at immigration should clear it up, IF they ask...

Do they have the automated queue on the way out? I've noticed them on the way in, but it was seven months ago that we left and I can't recall seeing one in the immigration departure area, which of course doesn't mean one wasn't there. Isn't someone checking boarding passes for security purposes to ensure that only ticketed passengers are entering the departure area? It will be some years before my son reaches the age of majority and his dual-passport-bearin' self will have to be concerned about such issues, but I am curious.

My wife and son both use two passports every time we travel. It's seems to be 50/50 whether you get an immigration officer who has seen it hundreds of times before and isn't phased by it in the slightest, or a gormless oaf who hasn't got a clue what he's doing and needs to ask a supervisor what the fuck is going on.

You may have a temporary solution, but I would seriously get her surname changed on the Thai passport for ease of traveling in the future. It's very little effort to do, even the Midget managed it!

Agreed it is easy but have you not thought that she may not want to change her name for a reason ................. nudge nudge

This problem will only occur travelling from Thailand to the US.....

I doubt we will make that trip again.

And yes, someone has mentioned the automated passport control, sounds good, but no stamp in the passport?.... sounds rather uncontrollin, rather UnThai..... 55555

I've spoken to the wife and she seems unconcerned.

She said she's been questioned at immigration before with her boarding pass and Passport having a different name to the children.

She's shown the UK passport to the immigration official and all has been well. Slightly different however so it won't stop my bum twitching....

Possibly she views that as a feature not a bug.

Knowing you, I am sure you have this covered but just in case. Although we don't need a visa don't forget to go on the website and tell them that you are going...........have a good trip.

Gents... I am gonna muscle in on this thread with a dependent passport question!

I am taking the wife and 1 year-old to the UK end of May. I will be coming back on reentry on work permit non immigrant b. Wife has Thai passport and kid (born in Thailand) has UK passport. He has Thai birth cert. etc but only has UK passport, not Thai.

My question is: If the kid exits/enters in on UK passport will there be a 30 day entry stamp in his passport, and is it anything to be worried about or will they wave him through no problems?

Get it sorted when you get back, marmite's told you it's a simple procedure, can't be nice for your wife getting the 3rd degree at immigration, that surely can happen to her every time you all leave Thailand ?

There's no overstay for kids in Thailand.
It's only 1000 baht for a Thai passport, one short 30 min visit to Central Bang Na mall and you go back to pick the passport up the same week

Cool, so he will be ok with a UK passport (can't be arsed to get a Thai one yet).

We have a stop over in Helsinki (I know!) on the way yo the UK. I dont reckon it'll be an issue but will my wife need a visa for Finland for the transfer?

It's not about planning...... She has no choice this time other than to do it differently.

I realised that the opposite happens every time she leave our destinations and we'd never even thought about it before.

Thinking back she only ever left once without the kids and that was when they were smaller, nowadays they go through immigration with me, therefore dragging me through the Thai channel if it's faster.

As for changing the name on the passport, that isn't ever going to happen. It's okay telling some in authority that we are married on a single occasion but as for documenting it officially with this country....never.
