Simon43, I say go for it. Many people both Thais and Falangs have said many of my ideas would not work. They would trot out figures, pitfalls and a myriad of reasons that my idea would not work.

Now many of them come to me and ask if this might work. Personally, I am glad that I did not listen to the negative people...

those threads often end with requests for funds for the wonderful investment

I'm in Phuket waiting for the rain to stop. Today is not too bad and I'm off to the OrBorTor after lunch to chase them about clearing the land (rubber tree roots and debris) from the Nature Resort project. Then the well diggers can get to work.

I'll post some more photos as soon as the work starts.

Meanwhile, I've been testing out solar garden lights and solar water heaters. Since the power supply for this resort is somewhat 'weak', the plan is to use most of it to power the air-con units, and to use solar water heaters fro the showers, and solar spots and ambience lights in the garden.

As reported by me on TV, I found a shop in Phuket with a good range of solar products, and discounted by 50%.

I went back to the Nature Resort location this morning, after the tree and debris clearing was finished.



With the land cleared, it's much easier to measure out important positions for the various services, such as electricity cables, waste pipes etc. An important check was to measure/identify the location for the septic tanks and soakaways that will deal with the black and grey water waste from the guest rooms.

At this stage, I only need to confirm that my chosen location fits in ok with my building locations. I will not actually install the septic tanks and soakaways until the building foundations are completed, and the pipework locations/levels from the toilet, basin and shower are clearly identified. As previously mentioned, sh*t doesn't usually flow uphill, and so I will only fix the depth of the septic tank and soakaway pipes after my workers have completed this initial pipework from the bathrooms. I can then ensure that the waste pipes have the correct slope per foot, and the depth where they end up at will fix the correct depth for my septic tanks/soakaways.

For this little project, there will be 5 septic tanks and 6 soakaways, (the extra soakaway is to handle the waste water soley from the washing machines, since this amount is greater than produced by the showers/basins).

During the land clearing yesterday, (and not surprisingly for a rural environment), quite a few snakes were disturbed. The common snake in this area is the cobra, which is best to keep out of sight of hotel guests. So this project will have a low wall on 3 sides and a higher wall that faces the road. The low wall needs to be about 1.5 metres height to discourage cobra snakes. Other, non-venomous snakes may gain access over this wall, but it's really the cobras that I want to keep out.

^ You could just put a warning sign up about the deadly snakes... If one of your guests then karks it from a snake bite you have already covered yourself.

Could you put up your plan views for both sites so they could be scrutinised?

[at]nigelandjan - The stumps and attached roots of the rubber trees have been dug out and removed by the backhoe - the roots you see are not attached to anything. But the workers will clean this all up before they start excavating the foundations for the buildings.

[at]rawlins - the problem with snakes is that customers just see a cobra snake (even if it is fleeing from them), they will flip and post warnings on TripAdvisor ==> not good for business

You need to be careful about posting danger signs. In litigation this shows that you knew there was a danger. Which is often seen as being liable to litigation. That is why people rarely have dangerous dog signs on their property.

^ You could get the guests to sign a disclaimer as they check in.

I had the occasional cobra at the old hotel - on one instance, 2 rather 'large' Australian women were having a traditional Thai massage in our wooden Thai sala when a cobra snake fell from the roof rafters and landed in between them..

You could have heard their screams all the way back to Sydney.
