Thread: 2 storey pig shed

It can be done although one would wonder about the cost. Is there a shortage of space? Moving food would probably be time consuming. Think a main concern would be ventilation.

You will also have to make sure you buy those special acrophobia-free piglets.

Can't imagine why she would want to build a double-decker pig pen. Only guess I can make is that you have very little land available for this project, and she is trying to get in more pigs in the limited space available. What's the deal? The whole concept seems fraught with problems - ventilation, movement, waste disposal, transport of feed, heat, transport of livestock, etc, etc. Doesn't seem very practical at all. Plus, if it is a space problem, and you have neighbors that close, they are not going to be very happy as piggeries STINK!

having just had another chat with mrs scotty (she talked i listened) it seems like its not for pigs on both levels as the bottom bit is quite low and it will house chickens and ducks.
the roof is going to be made up of woven reed type matting with bamboo used instead of steel work in a traditionally made roof i personally would of liked to have seen old monkeys style roof incorporated in the build,as it makes a lot of sense
still seems a bit silly to me though as there is definately plenty of land..
i think that some of the waste is going to land up in the fish pond and the rest is going to be mixed up with the rice husks and sold off in bags for rubber trees.

so i guess guys its a case of wait and see

University of Iowa did a study a long time ago about stacking pigs. What they did was to allow the top ones to shit down to the downstairs and the residents there ate it up. Dunno wht the results were?????????

Should have something on the internet about it.

tsicar the brother in law has kept pigs for quite a while now but he is too busy with other things so we have sort of inherited the old pig house and the rice mill, so i think that the idea is to feed the pigs mostly on the rice husks with added feed.
god knows where she got the idea of the dual storey/purpose shed as i have never seen one myself .

i think that she is going to do the structure in concrete then use bamboo and matting for roof etc to see if the idea is ok,
i will have to get her to do a rough drawing to see if it makes sense to me

i guess we can always use it as a store if things dont pan out

if you have the rice mill working and free byproduct it can work.
you need to study up on nutritional requirements for pigs, and just how far the byproduct will go to ensure your pigs will grow out profitably.
do NOT make the mistakes i made when i started the catfish thing,
ie:
assuming that the "experienced" thais had the slightest clue about how to raise fish, poultry, cattle or pigs.

many people make the mistake of thinking that experience counts for anything at all.
this is only true if one is willing to learn by experience, and move ahead, but in thailand it simply means that they have made the same mistakes for many years, learned nothing by it, and passed on their ignorance from generation to generation
get onto the internet and study how it works, and you may have a chance!

sage advice indeed tsicar, hope mrs scotty takes heed of the likes of it but being thai will probably listen to other thais whether they know what they are talking about or not (learned by first hand experience) rather than a mere farang who has studied up on it ..

all i will say that it is mrs scottys project and i will play it by ear when she gets round to things, she is not afraid of hard work so that is in her favour,

we have just bought 10 rai of land with a good supply of water, so what kind of things would be best growing for feeding the pigs ?.
i remember here in scotland years ago pig farmers used to go round the hotels restaurants taking away the slops to boilup to feed them on but i guess here in thailand that would already be sorted.

Find your local Lao Khao makers and ask to buy their waste rice mash.
