Thanks, splitlid... I don't have an image handy, but there is one atop the wat in this brief (5 min.) family video, taken last summer when we were back in the village. Seems like a lot of extra roofing to achieve the purpose or is there really a design purpose behind so much roofing?

Depending upon the scale of the building and roof feature you are describing I would call it a 'cupola' if the scale is small in relationship to the main roof - if it is a large raised roof feature I would describe it as a 'mansard'. Depending upon the interior requirement they can be used as an indirect light source using clerestory windows or ventitlation in hot climates.
