Speaking of DIY-ers, I saw this gal recently. She's a Filipina & she has done so many projects for her 2-storey townhouse/ apartment.

She has 361k subscribers (that's a feat in itself! ) and vid has 7.1M views. (note: she's visually appealing too)

Another talented person for DIY is the channel of "Get Hands Dirty". She has built so many space-saving stuff for her apartment.

Avoid drilling holes vertically up from any power points incase the wiring has been chased in.

Well, not before lunchtime anyway.

With regards to using the spirit level and drilling the holes for one shelf:
Step 1: Mark one of the holes where you want the shelf to hang.
Step 2: Drill out that hole, put a plug in, get the shelf and screw and fit the shelf losely with only that 1 screw.
Step 3: Put the Spirit Level on the shelf, hold it horizontally and then you can mark the second hole to be drilled.

Why 1 by 1? not mark both at the same time?
Because 9 out of 10 times, you'll slightly move the drill bit when starting the drilling. And then you compound it with the same error on the second hole, as masonry drills don't hold position very well.
So measure and drill the first one and your error-margin is significantly reduced.
It's also way easier to get a level shelf that way.


One more tip. Drilling large diameter holes. Use the smallest drill-bit first for pilot hole.
Then step up with 1 or 2 sizes larger drill-bits until reaching the required diameter.
Again this will avoid the afore mentioned 'skating of the drill'.
It is also way easier on the drill itself and less chance of getting cracks in your rendered walls.

Thanks to Miss MK for pointing out that I need a hammer drill/Impact drill because the walls are solid brick and concrete.



13mm. The biggest bolts are for the indoor climbing wall holds, and they seem to be around 8mm.

710w. Intergoogen says 550w to drill into bricks/concrete.

Is there any reason not to buy this one?

Will be used for the jobs at hand, then put into the blackhole store room except for dental emergencies.

Are drill bits all universal? If I need to buy more or new ones are all brands able to be swapped in and out, or would I be stuck having to buy Makita ones?

Makita are a premium brand, if you are just going to use it for this job you are wasting your money. Just get a mid priced c800w hammer drill from any national chain.

First job is learning how to hold it, then putting a rail with hooks on the laundry room wall to hang dustpan and brushes etc from.
