The Octagon House, Vermont
I lived in a glasshouse once, and always felt a bit uncomfortable at night
even with gardens all around
that blackhouse looks good in the woods
I'll post another plan tomorrow. I might even do a front and rear elevation if I get time.Originally Posted by Thetyim

It won't have 100% glass walls, just the rear 2/3 of the building to get the views overlooking the estate.
Well done Marmite. Not my kind of thing but I am still fascinated, none the less.
I guess you already know "don't throw stones"
OK, I've had a play, and this is where I'm at, so far.
Where's the children's room?
That looks much better but I would prefer less glass in the bedroom.
Which way is north?
Just had a brain-wave and moved the loo and reduced the size of the kitchen.
What does the bedroom wall where the door is bond to?
I'll give them a sack with some bricks in it and chuck it in the klong.Originally Posted by buad hai

Fek knows.Originally Posted by Thetyim
I suppose I'd like the right-hand side wall to face west, so you get nice sunsets and all that, so the bedroom/living area side will face south.
That wall would only be stud-walling, so whatever the architect decides. Either a small concrete pillar or the aluminium frame of the windows. I'm not really worried at the moment as I have a few decades to work it out.Originally Posted by dirtydog
While you're here, dd, I remember you saying how much basic shop-house style construction costs. Was it 6,000 Baht per SqM?
Also, how much for a reinforced concrete floor (roof actually) at about 300mm thick that is cast on site (not using precast slabs)?
Yep.Originally Posted by Marmite the Dog
About 2k baht up per sq meter cheaper to use the big light weight roof tiles.Originally Posted by Marmite the Dog
It wouldn't work as I would only get an overhang on 2 sides of the building, unless I put in diagonal beams.Originally Posted by dirtydog
Roof = 192 SqM (about 400,000 Baht)
Living Area = 96 SqM (600,000 Baht)
So I should be looking at about 1 million Baht to construct this?
superb thread Marmite.
I am having some big second thoughts about my place now.
right at the last minute.
they are due to start building this Thursday.
bollux.
A bit less than that, but things like kitchen counters, nice electrics and classy bathroom could bring it over that.Originally Posted by Marmite the Dog
I'll let you live in my storage room for much less than that. Further discounts if you tidy it for me.Originally Posted by Marmite the Dog
I neither want nor need expensive bathrooms or kitchens. The bathroom will cost 6k at most.
I do need to work out how to build this for 250k. I think 1 million is way over the top for this as there is very little construction apart from the floor, columns and roof.
I will look into a lightweight timber & steel roof, but I'm still unsure of the ability to weatherproof it properly.
I am sitting down properly with my architect next Wednesday and I know a concrete specialist here too.
Cheapest bathroom we ever built cost about 15k baht, had 3 walls already 4 walls of 2 by 2.5 meters is cheapest 10,000baht, tile up to 2 meter high 6,500baht, fittings, plumbing, pump, ceiling, hot water heater, toilet, sink, door and door frame, cess pit, etc etc, nope, can't be done.Originally Posted by Marmite the Dog
not a good start CMN
I hope you sat down with your architect and went through everything that you wanted from your house. Then went and talked some more to other designers?
if you are having second thoughts, particularly structural ones, then you had better put it on hold until you feel happier. If you are not getting what you want, or can do better for about the same price, then it would be better to wait
I have reported your post
Forgot the bathroom ceiling ext4ractor ventilation fans aswell, and maybe some glass blocks.Originally Posted by Marmite the Dog
Not much construction but lots of material cost. Even if you choose the most spartan materials (bathroom, kitchen, flooring, roof, etc.) I don't see how you can get by for anything under 600,000 baht.Originally Posted by Marmite the Dog
you could build the concrete part for B250K, no problem, including the roof possibly
That's the price for a better quality throne..Originally Posted by Marmite the Dog
