Good point. We like Chaiyaphum for it's slightly cooler weather, so definitely planning to sleep with the windows opened (and the mosquito screens closed!)

FYI, the samples below show the kind of folding shutters I had in mind - very common in France (home country). Most don't even have a lock, and can be optionally reinforced with a horizontal bar.

FYI there's a member on here who's company sells high quality mesh security doors. I've forgotten what we call it in Australia but it's every where. Pretty good stuff too.

    CRIMSAFE maybe....?

Yep, Crimsafe, thanks crackerjack101. I've seen a few security doors with cruder mesh in Thailand. Will research that too.

You don't say where you live, I live in a village at the end of nowhere, we leave doors and windows open, keeps the place cooler.

2 fat lazy dogs, a village that has an AK or M14 in nearly every hut, no doors for many of them, buglers will end up on a one way walk into the jungle.

Also, have heard a number of instances where peeps installed bars on windows et al and they went in through the roof, lifted a few tiles. As mentioned sometimes the more security is visible the more somchai thinks you've got something to nick. Dogs etc are good but even those can unfortunately be (unpleasantly) dealt with.

Ultimately you're never 100% secure and dummy CCTV cameras or even real ones could be just as much a detterrant, suppose its what gives you peace of mind vs your worry/risk of a break-in.

I've been burgled twice over the years. 1st time the guy was in our bedroom whilst we were asleep. He woke the wife. Saw what she looked like and fcuked off. The 2nd time they poisoned me dogs, 2 Golden Spaniels. Unfortunately I didn't have security grills installed at the time.
Had one attempted break in since but they fled leaving a flip flop behind.

Zero noise tolerance up by your way?

for get about getting a dog unless you intend to train it NOT TO EXCEPT food from strangers and keep it indoors overnight.
why not get a MAXWELL RISCO security system, that covers the roofs aswell,we to live on a mooban and our alarm went off and woke up everyone on the estate.
also if not already been fitted with 5mm.glass windows that helps, all the thai's are fitted with 2mm.

The best way to keep intruders out of your property is an electric security fence.

Plus when the alarm sounds the intruder is still outside the property.

So sorry, in my mind I merged 2 threads and thought I had given background in the current thread... My wife and I are in the process of building a house in the Chaiyaphum district, in a small village along a paved rural road, out in the boonies. Our piece of land is bordered by the road on one side and fields, mostly planted with cassava on the three other sides.

Thanks for the tips, headhunter. Will look into that system. The house we're planning to build will use modern materials, so 5mm windows is what it will have!

I've been thinking about an electrified fence... a shop with a large yard and materials down a few miles away has one. And thinking about cameras too, at least to keep a recording, if not a deterrent. Then again, all of these security features combined will be obvious... but if it gives us peace of mind...

Not from Chaiyaphum at all. From a different district which we don't really like. Settling there is by choice.
