Guess it could be as I have seen them myself working. But these workers were a combination of males and females.

Septic tank cleaners are called "Honey Dippers" in these parts, same job different titles!!!

That's the usual American term.
Here in Saudi we use Bangladeshis when needed, but most of the work is done by vacuum trucks (sludge gulpers / perfume wagons / honey trucks) and the driver's mate just wears heavy gloves. Some residual smell, but as with most Middle Eastern men, they just add a little more perfumed deodoriser spray to the ensemble.
