Really like the idea of buying and renovating, right up my alley.

    All the best with it.
It was a great price, having said that, there are lots out there. Some were much better houses and many were under 400,000 (Which was our upper limit).

The BIG battle was finding one that had the "ingredients" for my wife. Lots of land, no history of flooding, nice neighbours.... etc... I could not believe some of the bargains she passed on.

She is 19 yrs younger and the chances are great that she will outlive me. I want her to be happy where she is - far more important than any "perceived" bargain by me.

I recon it's brilliant what you are doing.

I would buy one myself but I need to be in a city unfortunately.

I would do exactly the same as you if I was a country guy and liked the quiet life.

Yeah Terry, great price indeed. And actually a lot less than a new car in LOS! .

4 ngan = 1 rai. Had to look that one up.

A ngan (Thai: งาน, rtgs: ngan, IPA: [ŋāːn]) is a unit of area, equal to 400 square metres (20 m × 20 m), used for measuring land or property area. Its current size is precisely derived from the metre, but is neither part of nor recognized by the modern metric system, the International System (SI).

Your right mate that is the correct transliteration but, I prefer phonetic because I cannot pronounce "NG".....

However, I know minor things like that irritate some "twerps" (No pun intended), so I will defer to the correct in future

Todays work consisted of continuing with the toilet/shower... We happily snapped pics all day, only to find we had left the SDcard at home.

My beautiful wife had a spare in her handbag, which most people call a suitcase.

We snapped precious few at the end of the day.

Feng Shui has it's part in our world (Not mine) hence we could not have a door facing a door in a direct line of sight. SO we built a wall..

Hers a pic of two guys "rendering the wals in the toilet/shower.

Here is a pic of our builder - he's 67yrs old... you can see the "new" wall behind him

Oh.. BTW the wall cost 1000 Baht ALL UP. (The 12 glass bricks were just over half the 1000B alone)

I'm really astounded at the low purchase price of this house. Is there any way to buy such a place without having to hook up with one of the locals?

    ^^

It would be highly unlikely a farang could negotiate a price like that on his own.

The really great thing about this thread is the purchase price is virtually piss money and one could walk away laughing if the relationship went tits up.

Not for the OP though as he's on quite a tight budget it seems.

Go around with your wife looking for houses. Take note of contact info from signs posted on the house gate or nearby posts. Then get your wife to contact the owners for asking price.

Never let the owner see you until your wife is given the Thai asking price. Otherwise you'll get the farang price.

I bought a townhouse for 600k that my wife scouted out by herself, but others of the same size in the same mooban that we both looked at where the owners were still residing quoted us 900k and 1.4 Mil.

I probably could've got a house for around 500k, but for personal reasons and with what the house came with, I settled for one at 600k.

Bought my house in Don Muang on the Pathum Thani border 20 years ago.

It already had approx. 100k worth of improvements already done. Things that I would've had done anyway.

Could not get a perspective as there is too much vegetation on the block and cannot find an angle to see through... Here is a few pics that may help.

    And This

Where the king bed used to be.. That is NOT a crack in the wall...

ONLY if you have the type of business visa allowing you to purchase.

For the most part, foreign people cannot own land.

You CAN build or buy a house on land owned by a Thai. as long as the Thai retains ownership of the land part. Some lawyers specialise in this.... But, this is way off topic for me.

I was tempted by a house, 3brm in Doi Saket district for Baht 282,000
    - 50 Talang Wah (about 200sqm) and in reasonable nick. 15k's (about 9 American/English miles ) OR 1.5 swedish miles..... Trivia nut) from Tha Phae Gate.

For the "married to a thai persons" on this board - it is just a matter of Thai husband/wife putting it solely in their name.

We are 17 years married and she is still my beautiful bride. I cannot envisage a circumstance where we would part... She tells others that too (not me)

Yes we are all different (which is great), our way of life is full and rich. The serenity, offered by village life, serves as a retreat for us, in our otherwise exciting & busy schedule. Neither of us drink alcohol or smoke, hence, we have few friends that are anything but very occasional drinkers.

Anyhow thanks for the best wishes....

I may hint on our interests and how we fill our lives at a later date.. in the meantime I will concentrate on providing for my beautiful bride....

Wrong. Visas make no difference at all to the ability to buy property. Under no circumstances can a farang buy land personally. They can set up a business with a 49% ownership, the rest being Thai, and buy it through the business. However, they are cracking down on the nominee businesses and ownership of property especially if the business is not actually trading and only exists to own the property. I seem to recall there was a scheme (gold VIP super dooper scam or something like that) where you could pay 2m baht to them and for that be allowed to buy a rai of land, but that seems to have disappeared.
