    OK . Enough . ( Thanks Necron ) .

I still don't know why people get so abusive so quickly .

I thought that was why the Forum is here . People who admit they don't know get answers from people who do know .

Why that leads to abuse is still beyond me. Like there are people sitting waiting for any chance to be aggressive .
Even when you try to write an entertaining Construction Thread you get some abuse . Why ?

Still ..... there are enough helpful people to make the asking worthwhile .

    To those ( many ) folks --- thanks .

I have enough now to work with.

move and plant some big trees to create a shade over the house, look for trees with small leaves, that will allow breeze through, choose one which is higher than the house, without invasive roots. I suggest Indian Cork Tree (ปีบขาว) is a great one for the job, a mature tree cost about 3000-4000 baht. depends on where you are located add another 500-600 baht for planting

The problem is specifically two walls which get a battering of direct sunlight all through the day .
I wasn't around when these were built .
I had not read a single Construction Thread when Missy was giving the cousin clearance to go ahead and make the walls in single concrete block construction .... which gather in loads of heat and keep it !
He must have bought a load of those bricks they use in Night Storage Heaters .

    What can I do ?

It's this wall facing you with the single window and the wall around the corner to the Left which are the heating problem .

The solutions which come to mind are --

    1. Try to extend the shortish overhang . But this is not easy . It's a long way up and then it would have to come out a long way and probably angle down to put the walls into shade .
Supporting that wouldn't be an easy thing .

    2. Put insulation onto the interior wall . Cover that with board and screed it .

    3. Build a second Q-Con wall on the inside ?

    4. Spray the walls to cool them down ? A bit primitive and tedious .

Any suggestions from you much more technically-gifted people would be appreciated .

That has to be the ugliest fukking house I have ever seen, I would knock it down and start again, try using vegetation to shield it from direct sunlight.

Jeez, what an eyesore. Those Roman pillars.

Another option would be to stay in an air-conditioned hotel for the duration of the holiday.

You're not being very helpful Tax,

Considering what his wife lived in before this new house would be a Palace.

Must keep these things in perspective mate.

^ But the old house would have some air flowing through it - one of the benefits of having a wooden house that 'leaks'. It also had wooden shutters on the windows, which would have kept some of the heat and light out.

That wooden shack will have been more comfortable to live in than the fukking pizza oven her blind cousin built for them.

Looks like one of those monstrosities the Romanian gypsies build for their families when they go home after a lucrative seasons shoplifting and pickpocketing in London, all Roman pillars and a
dirt yard knee deep in shite.

But as to his problem, the answer is quite simple. Vegetation, and lots of it. Buy some trees, they spring up in no time here in Thailand, and will not only protect you from the heat, it will protect onlookers from having to look at the house.

Seems as the newer style [last 15-20 years] of ugly and linear "block" houses tend to retain the heat, as they have less air flow - encased.

    Wasp, what abuse??

Folk here are, in the main, giving you advice.Admittedly, some of it is total bollox but then, some here are as daft as brushes.

Look, you seem to think your walls are a heat source. They are at 90 degree angle to the ground. The sun rises here circa 0630 hrs and sets 12 hours later. Of that period it is no less than 8 hours at 80+ degrees to your house. Approaching the vernal equinox it will be 90 degrees to your house most of the time. I assume the hot walls are west facing. Therefore, as a source of direct heat, the sun is banging on that wall for probably no more than 3 hours. Screening and shading might help a bit, but not a lot. Your roof is the bugger given that it looks nearly flat and is capturing as much heat from direct sunlight as possible.

Your walls are fuck all to do with your problem, except the total lack of any shade. It's your roof. Look, have you seen the steeply pitched double roofed teak house with gaps between and long overhangs? They're that way because it was an efficient way of ameliorating the effects of direct sunlight that comes mostly from directly overhead rays.

You might be able to contain heat from invading the living space by screening the underside of that roof with foil. It will however also contain ambient heat which rises. If you were truly serious about doing something you would be best to fit more, larger windows but without glass, just louvres and a fly screen, to assist airflow, and whack in some overhead fans.

Frankly, you're still just jerking off with the problem and need to lose that roof before you do anything else.

This is all way off the subject .

It's not a case of thinking the walls are a heat source .

Put the palms of your hands on those two walls and they are damned hot .

Every other wall in the place is quite cool . So apart from all the other information I've gained here I'm still primarily wanting to cool down those walls .
I'm not ' imagining ' they are hot .They ARE hot .

And that's the problem that I came here with .

Slats are going onto those two walls today . With a gap .
Some louvred ventilation high up and three fans .

Maybe even a whirlgig extractor to speed along any airflow .

THAT .... I feel sure ..... will help things quite a bit .

    Wasp

    I'm feeling quite chilly today!

thaimeme : Realistically , needs to do the whole thing over .
Realistically .... not a chance . See koman above .

taxexile : the answer is quite simple - Vegetation .
Yes , taxexile ..... but not possible . There is only enough width there for a vehicle . And it's needed : for a vehicle .
Then you hit the Grandmother's house and until she passes on we can't do anything .
When she does go to meet Buddha we can plant trees . So we're waiting.

^Don't be so hasty, think of the capital gains to be had.

Put some fabric sun screens over the roof and walls. Most boutique hotels have something like this. If you have them shaped like yacht sails they will double the selling price of your existing box.

    or this

Failing that make it a hotel, find another lady and build her one with the local climate in mind. Not what her friends/cousin/gik want her to build - a 2 storey concrete box.

Put some plastic pipe horizontally along the top of the wall. Punch holes it the pipe and run a plastic pipe up the wall. Drill lots of small holes along the pipe pointing into the wall. Connect it to the water supply and turn it on. The water running down the wall will cool it. In addition the quickly growing mould/algae with retain the moisture. Both short term and long term cooling achieved, along with an "Eco" feeling added to the somewhat bland box you have now.

Simon's the man to talk too.

Good idea. Then, you save money to travel to sauna in the nearest city.

Possibility, as bamboo absorbs heat and sunlight.

    .
Thank you for this OhOh .

I like the canvas screens .

I had never given the windows a lot of thought because I was already surprised enough how damn hot the walls can get . But when I touched the tinted glass it's scorching .
The windows are not that big but they are like two radiators working at full power.

I've started with the slats but I like that canvas screen enough to go and look for it today .

The water ....... I'll see how the slats go .

You will be replacing 'canvas' every year due to the extreme climate. A tensile solution will also be expensive especially if it's done with a synthetic fabric made for the purpose.

    I do listen.

    I read Humbert and I think " OK . Cancel that one . "

And then I read palexxx and think " Hmm . It does look nice though . "

Right now I'm just putting awnings over those two windows .

Meanwhile in the background we have the drunken father shouting and upsetting the lady who said we can have road and who is now saying we cannot have a road because the drunken father is such a shite .

This drunken crap is regular .

We're out in the sticks so the young ones head for Bangkok , Phuket or Germany and the old ones are left behind . So there is a steady dying rate and a steady availability of alcohol for all the fake mourners .
Plus of course the dirge-like music at top volume starting about 4 am.

Makes me miss drizzle and solitude.

    You're right .

    It does .

And Thailand has never been a search for happiness . I'm very happy in the UK .... it's just the financials . Like so many many people there comes a point where downscaling is the only way to get through the last quarter of living and Thailand offers a way to do it .

    That's the only reason .

FIL falling over drunk and Grandma pissing in the corner of her shack are not the allure you might think them to be.

    Too hot?

    Too hot?
    Wondering what's the issue about.

I have been making fire every evening, morning in my fireplace (tau), lucky that I have got plenty of firewood free.

I am enjoying starting the fire without any paper, firing up one splinter full of resin (from the mountain trees) just with a lighter. And a good scent. Do you know that? Can be bought in the local markets.

(Wondering how Cnx37 will fare in Fang Mountain during this cool spell)
