As a matter of fact, the swimming pools - when furnished by a filtering equipment - can be vacuumed by the same pump - thru the filter or bypassed, directly drained. Or any simple pump separately used just for such sucking.

The hassle is always when the sucking hose is not filled in with water - and the pump is above the water level. This can be a test of patience before the pump starts to suck.

In my case I have the sucking hose permanently connected to the filtering system, separated by a valve, ready to suck anytime, described in my thread.

Thanks Klondyke, but I am an absolute engineering idiot. After reading your thread, I still cannot figure out what I can do to suction and filter water in my fish pond, given my present setup. Do you ever get up to the north side of CM? I'm just off the Chiang Mai-Mae Rim Road (107), before the last Ring Road. I don't get down to Lampang much at all - although I was actually down there just two weeks ago.

    Terp,
I am trying to explain it (even for "an absolute engineering idiot.").

Attaching now a schematic diagram of the water flow. However, it can be simplified, left out few steps.

    Terp,
for your immediate cure (or the fish pond's), just take the subm. pump, fix it to a 2m bamboo handle (like at mai kwaat - broom) and move it around the bottom of the fish pond. However, first, plug it in. And the water discharge direct to flowers, they will be very happy for the fertilizer.

It would not help you that I come to Ch.M. Make a trip to Lampang and see how it can be made.

See also an affordable swimming pool, the kids would enjoy swimming more than just the fish watching.

And you can see also woodenware factory - be my guest - all this can give you some ideas.

    Forestry Elephant School

And on the way to Lampang visit Elephant school, they show their skill at forestry jobs (and painting pictures too), something different than the Ch.M. show for falang tourists

Thanks for that schematic Klondyke. I nice straight forward design, I think.

Great! What size (and make) submersible pump should I get? Do I have to buy separate hoses to go with it and build the thing?

Thanks for the invitation, Klondyke. If I get the chance, I will. But . . .

Daewoo pump (submersible) that is useful in every house not only for fish shit:
Can be bought in Big C or Tesco or any construction shop for some 1,500B.
To care than the cord is long enough and that the pump is not so heavy.
    A hose 3/4" - 1", 3 - 5 m has to be added.
Sometime when started it does not suck immediately, having air bubble inside. Plug out, plug in and it works.

That's perfect! I'll try to get this sort of thing this week some time. Thanks Klondyke!

    Terp,
In order not having to suck the koi shit every 2 - 3 days, you can set up 2 -3 plastic barrels, situated a bit higher than the fish pond for a continous circulation.

Then the subm. pump forwards the sucked water into the 1st barrel, connected in a cascade to the next barrel(s), etc. From the last barrel the clean water flows by a gravitation back into the fish pond.

The barrels you buy 2nd hand, connected by PVC pipes (helped by a village chang), each barrel should have a drain valve at the bottom for letting the settled shit out.

The pumping can be controlled by a time switch, not to have it run 24h, but say we every 10 min, then 10 min stop, or similarly.

And or it can be combined with a level switch in the first barrel (that avoid an overflow) that makes the oump on/off depending on selected levels.

The barrel should be filled by a filtering mat (or just a foam), but not so much, see to it that it can be easily taken out within few weeks and washed.

In Chiang Mai is a big famous shop with koi fish where they have any possible things needed (and also not necessarily needed), I cannot explain where, but you can ask people around. Nearby of every flower markets there are smaller fish shops with the filtering material, some of them have ready made smaller plastic barrels for such filtering.

A rather ingenious system you have there Klondyke! I don't think I have the room or the set up to have it though. I only have a small space for grass and flowers.

The only place I can think of is the Kham Thiang Market in back of the Tesco-Lotus on the Super Highway. They have a little soi that has several koi/fish pond shops there. One of the guys there is the man who set up my pond (Khun Thep).

    Terp,
yes, that is it: Sun Aqua Center. With the huge tanks and kois each for 30,000 B. Then you are in good hands. He did not advice any filtering?
Now I have found it https://www.google.com/maps/@18.8077.../data=!3m1!1e3

He set up the regular pond filter system, but not a bottomsucking vacuum thing. I'll talk to him about that. Thanks again Klondyke!
