Alot of foriegn guys seem to have houses in their missus' home towns as they are useful for visiting, cheap and because of that having a house there is good for "face". When you are away though what measures do you take towards security? ie alarms? cctv maybe? i dunno. I am planning on a house to be built on two rai of our land that we are not using at the moment. It will be large and have all the modern appliances that you would expect in a european house. I just worry that when we are away jealous people may want to "inspect" the house. The family plot is within walking distance and i know they will keep an eye out but i am just a bit parranoid about it.

i'm sure you'll have nothiong to worry abt, the family will, err, look after anything of value before any thieves could take it....

The only way to have security up country is to build your house next to the in-laws. Not sure if you should worry about them more than the burglars.

Considering that my car was stolen by a security guard on our estate about six months ago, I'm not sure that anywhere can be considered totally secure in Thailand.
Considering that the miscreant got less than half a Km away before crashing the car, totalling it and winding himself up in hospital, I don't think that anything necessarily goes to plan in Thailand.

If you trust your in-laws within the inevitable Thai margin of error, you are probably as safe as anywhere else. Maybe buy a big dog?

I definetly trust the imediate family ie her sisters, nephews and neices BUT there is alot of jealousy up there from other people in the village and i dont want my hard earned money going to waste because the house is being broken into every few months.

If you're not there full time, then why kit it out with Western style appliances? You can do that later when you will stay there longer periods of time. Of course fully built in things like a stove & oven are not very likely to go missing when you have family somewhat nearby.

The only thing technology wise that I think could make sense is have lights there that turn on when there's movement.

Those security lights are a good thing. I have them in my house in CM.

everyone came round at night to see the lights switch on by themselves, what fun we had

the best thing you can do for security is to pay someone you trust a small fee to look after the place when you are not there.
