If it's an old one, try Puppy or DSL.
    Win 7 works perfectly.

Ah. I thought you meant "old".

It must be 7 or 8 years old.

    It's a Compaq Presario 2800 (1gb P4) which I have upgraded with a 1gb stick of RAM.

Win 7 works perfectly on a Netbook, too.

But if you have something even older, DSL and Puppy have a footprint <100Mb installed, and at least one of them will run entirely from RAM.

Handy if you want a machine dedicated to one particular task, like downloading or something, and have some really old hardware laying around that you can't otherwise use.

Yep Win 7 with 2Gb works on most things. I actually disabled the pagefile on my Netbook to save the SSD and it's still fine.

It was the old RAM chips that were causing a problem, but I've decided to stick with Win7 even though I have a new RAM chip.

    You don't.

Win 7 is too complicated for you anyway.

If they work for you, that's great - good luck to you. I remember Windows millenium, 2000, XP and vista causing me nothing but problems (the O/s, not office...). Now, windows is so invasive that I just don't accept their 'right' to come in and out of my system/life at will...

Still very happy with Linux, it's easier, quicker and more user friendly than I thought it'd be.

MtD if you want to become a Mac homosexual, it's your choice, but don't try to convince us it's better because it's not,

you couldn't tell anyhow since your skills in computer techs are nil
