    Lookout Ad Network Detector

    Description

Ad Network Detector scans your phone or tablet for the presence of the most common ad networks used in mobile apps, giving you insight into what types of ads can be displayed, and what information is gathered by the ad networks. With easy access to this information, you'll be able to decide whether you want to keep the app that has certain ad networks on your phone.Smartphone usage has skyrocketed, and some advertisers have begun to experiment with aggressive, new techniques to display ads on mobile devices. This includes pushing ads to the standard Android notification bar, dropping generically designed icons on the mobile desktop, and modifying browser settings like bookmarks or the default homepage. Because each of these techniques can display an advertisement outside the context of a specific application, it's very difficult for users to know exactly which app is responsible for any given ad. Ad Network Detector provides a method for users to determine which ad network and application are the source for such ads.
It's also common for ad networks to collect information that identifies a specific device or user for use in targeted marketing campaigns. Much like for browser-based ads, this practice allows users to see more personalized or relevant ads. Despite permissions-based information access, it is often difficult for the users to understand what aspects of their information are collected by ad networks. Lookout Labs has investigated the capabilities and information collection methods specific to each ad network. Ad Network Detector tells users exactly what data is being collected, and by whom.
We've designed Ad Network Detector to make the practices supporting mobile advertising more transparent to the average user. The app detects many but not all ad networks, and we fully intend to increase the number of detected ad networks to keep mobile users as informed as possible.

    Ad Network Capabilities & Privacy
Lookout Labs has investigated the capabilities and information collection methods specific to each ad network. Based on this research, Ad Network Detector details what identifying information is collected by and ad network, and how it is collected. "Personal information" is defined as info that is directly linkable to an individual user, such as email address. "Device and Network Information" is defined as information that is specific to an individual device or netwok, rather than to the user.
    Lookout Mobile Security
This app is not a replacement for Lookout Mobile Security, and it will not detect or repair malware. Downloading Lookout Mobile Security is the best way to keep your phone safe from malware and spyware, back up your data, and locate, scream, lock, or wipe a lost or stolen phone.
    About Lookout Labs
This is a project of the Labs division of Lookout Mobile Security. The goal of Lookout Labs is to explore new ideas and push the boundaries of mobile apps. Labs projects are experimental by nature, and may only be available for a limited time.

Download Android 4.1 Jelly Bean update for Kindle Fire By Alan Ng on July 12, 2012 0Comments
    PRon

Android 4.1 Jelly Bean hasn’t even been released officially yet, but we can tell you that the latest version of Google’s mobile operating system has already been ported to another device, the Amazon Kindle Fire tablet.

Jelly Bean is set to make its official appearance on the Nexus 7 tablet at the end of this month, but those of you in possession of a Kindle Fire may be tempted with this impressive looking port of Android 4.1. The Kindle Fire ships with a customized version of Android 2.3 Gingerbread, but if you have already tampered with custom software on your Kindle Fire, you’ll know that there are even more possibilities waiting for you aside from what Amazon give you out of the box. Aside from giving the Kindle Fire access to the spanking new interface that Jelly Bean brings, it more importantly gives users access to the Google Play store, as the Kindle Fire by default only allows users to connect to the Amazon App Store for their software needs.

The build is far from perfect, but for a first go it is very impressive indeed. We’re hearing that the likes of hardware video acceleration is not supported at the moment meaning that HD videos are a no go, but the good news is that this should be fixed up in a later build along with other missing features.

To give this a go, you’ll find detailed instructions over at Liliputing – you’ll also need to download the latest version of the Kindle Fire Utility app, which you can get from the XDA Developers Forums here. Check out a video below to see how Jelly Bean looks on the device.

We’re impressed at how smooth Android 4.1 runs on the Fire, let us know what you think.

Looks like Qatar are getting their 787's at long last.

If you're an airplane enthusiast, you should not miss out visiting Britain for the Farnborough International Airshow which takes place every second July. Today, Qatar Airways was kind enough to provide us with the information needed about their latest aircraft, the Boeing 787-800 Dreamliner. The company configured the aircraft with 22 business class seats and additional 232 in Economy class, both utilizing the same IFEC (In-Flight Entertainment and Connectivity) system - Thales Avant TPMU (Touch Passenger Media Units). Under this cryptic name, there are two versions - 17.3" LCD for Business and 10.1" LCD for the Economy Class.
Unlike the previous-gen systems which all used boxes beneath seats, i8000 Avant TPMU is a completely integrated unit consisting out of STMicro airline grade dual-core processors based on the ARM architecture, 1GB of RAM and 256GB of SSD. That's right, a single 787 airplane entertainment system will feature 508 ARM Cores, 254GB of memory and 63.5TB of SSD space. This however, is not all, as the central server comes with a 32-core processor (Intel Xeon or AMD Opteron, your guess is as good as ours), 128GB of memory and 4TB storage… all SSD, of course.
For operating system, Thales selected Google Android running a customized application suite. Furthermore, the airplane comes with Wi-Fi and GSM connectivity, thus you will be able to connect your phones and tablets to Wi-Fi or 3G GSM network and enjoy connecting to your family while flying 38,000 feet in the air. In words of Alan Pellegrini, CEO of Thales IFEC "The Avant system is the future of IFE for us, you can now get on board an aircraft and not just watch the movie in front of you, but perhaps view the moving map, play a game, or order meals or drinks simultaneously while watching what's on the main screen."
Qatar Airways is not the only customer, though - British Airways signed on as well, and will be equipping its future 787s and with the same system as well. When it comes to Airbus A380, both Qatar and British Airways signed Thales to develop the next generation system, which will debut next year. Codenamed i9000, it will bring next-generation hardware, continuing being powered by the Google Android operating system. Now, would you object having a 17.3" Full HD tablet with 256GB of onboard storage? Or a 10.1" one?
If you're wondering about the cost, bear in mind that in the airline industry, the only real measurement is the weight, because this system, with all the crazy terabytes of solid state memory - weighs 80% less than the previous system. According to our rough calculations, the savings in carrying less weight will reduce the fuel consumption by 0.8% per flight. If the plane consumes 33,000 gallons of (Jet-A) kerosene per long-range flight at 2 flights per day, the plane will save of 528 gallons of kerosene per day. At current prices, we are talking about $4,065 in savings. In a year, we're talking about saving $1.48 million. Given that Qatar refurbishes cabins every 5-6 years (and replaces them with even lighter solutions), this system will save at least 7 million dollars. Given its cost (give or take $1.5-2.2M per plane), we would not be surprised if Qatar and other airlines end up putting this system in as much planes as possible.

Android rules U.S. and Europe smartphone sales

New data by Kantar shows that Android has at least half of all smartphone sales in the U.S., Australia, and five major markets in Europe.
    by Dara Kerr
    July 11, 2012 6:36 PM PDT

For the first time ever, Android has dominated smartphone sales in several major markets, including the U.S., Germany, Great Britain, France, Italy, Spain, and Australia, according to data released today by market analysis firm Kantar Worldpanel ComTech.
In all of these countries, Google's mobile OS has taken at least half of smartphone sales, with the lowest being in Italy at 49.6 percent and highest in Spain with 84.1 percent. The data is from sales recorded over the last 12 weeks ending on June 10.
"We are seeing much of the Android sales growth being driven by consumers trading up from feature phones to smartphones," ComTech's consumer insight director Dominic Sunnebo said in a statement. "Android handsets currently offer an easier platform to enable these consumers to upgrade, as many first time smartphone consumers state 'price of handset' and 'multimedia capabilities' as their main reason for choosing an Android device."
ComTech's data shows that people who want to spend under $80 on a mobile device tend to go with Android. As far as smartphones go, the Samsung Galaxy Ace and Y are selling well, according to ComTech.
"Smartphone consumers are much more loyal to their brand of handset and carrier than feature phone consumers, highlighting the importance of capturing feature phone owners when they are starting to look to change their handset," Sunnebo said.

Despite Android's 50.2 percent share in the U.S., it's important to note that this number has decreased by 6.8 percent from last year. "This trend contrasts Apple's growth," Sunnebo said, "which is a reflection of a successful iPhone 4S release and the first time availability of the iPhone 4 and 4S on Sprint." Apple has 37.4 percent of the U.S. market, which is an 8.7 percent increase over last year. Not surprisingly, RIM lost market shares across the board; and Symbian fared almost as dismally with just a 0.3 percent rise in the U.S. and decreases in every other country, including a 38.6 percent fall in Spain.
Android's domination in the mobile world seems to be an ongoing trend. In May, ComTech showed similar results with strong market share gains for Google's mobile OS.
    Here is ComTech's newest data:

The latest data from Kantar Worldpanel ComTech shows that for the first time Android has taken at least half of smartphone sales in Great Britain, Germany, France, Italy, Spain, US, and Australia, recorded over the last 12 weeks ending June 10.

I'd actually look forward to hacking this only my Nook Color. Great little tablet - I'm sure there'll be a port before long.

The only chance for Apple (in the long run) will be to adopt Android.

But it probably buggers up the Amazon stuff, which sort of defeats the object of the Fire.

These hacks inevitably completely replace everything native. That's why I like the Nook Color - so extremely easy to hack, as well as to restore (the moment it detects an SD card inserted, it tries to boot from the card - so, you can run a self-rooting OS from it, with a script that installs the new OS on the NC; or you can actually run whatever you want to test directly from the SD, 'live', and when done, remove the SD card, and reboot. In terms of engineering, the NC is far better designed. In terms of user interface, a far more elegant design - very Apple Like (I can hear you groan).

The Kindle is far more of a pain to work on, and of a far less elegant design, IMO.

I like the Kindle, I use it primarily as an e-reader on flights and in airports, so the screen is fine, and you can still browse and install non-Amazon apps on it, so it does for quick news/score checks and shit as well.

The signature won't be fixed until DD pulls his head out of his ass, and acts less butt-hurt.

I have the nook simple touch for reading - eInk is what eReaders should be, and this one is good. Loaded my entire original book collection, everything I had ever read since I was a kid, on it. Now I can read anything anywhere.

I've tried downloading ICS 4 times now, never works; Sony says it works, sends me update messages all the bloody time, but the updates never work... Guess I'll be sticking with Gingerbread then...

^ thanks, 'Arry, but the Gingerbread is good - I've just completed loading up the SD card, so I don't wanna have to go through the process again (tried to download before sorting out the new SD card, but...).

The phone is the Sony Xperia mini ST15 (I think).

^ that was before I started filling up the new SD card; as I understand it, that data (all saved data?) will be lost if I download to ICS.
