    Which netbook?

I've been studying on buying a netbook.

I've narrowed it down to the two which come standard with 6 cell batteries and 160G hardrives.

In the lead are the two samsung models:
ND-10 and NC-10, the two have identical hardware, the NC-10 is 11000baht with win XP and the ND-10 is ready for Linux for 10000baht.
The Samsung has the nicer keyboard.

Next is the Lenovo S-10, it come with win xp which also includes a copy of microsolf office which is not on the Samsung, for 14000baht.
Both of these get tip top reviews for quality and customer service.

I'm leaning towards the stripped down Samsung and saying good buy to microcrapsoft completely.
This probably more of a OS system question and whether it's worth 1000 to 4000 baht extra to fuss with microsoft.

Dump microsoft, it isn't needed for most things and I can't imagine there is any software that you need that is only microsoft compatible.

I kinda ruled that one out because it comes standard with only a 3 cell battery and a 120g hardrive at about 12000 baht.

That kinda what I want to hear.
Saddly the kids selling puters at MBK didn't have a clue how to boot the Samsung Linux machine. I'll have to go back and "beat some heads".
Seems to me 10000 baht is reasonably priced.
I suppose if I get stuck on Linus for some reason I could get an external cd drive and load the Mac OS discs from my macbook. I know people are doing that too.

The Asus Eee is good if you want a highly portable device. A friend of mine takes it travelling with him always, and swears by it.

Problem is, they seem to cost about double (14k bht) here in Los than he bought his for in Oz.

Bought mine with 160gb and a 9cell battery (rock solid - mind you have an older 8.9in model)

Check out the Toshibas, I bought 2 for the kids and they are great, 95% of a full size keyboard, and very long battery life. They love them.

I bought the very same notebook yesterday. I was stuck between a few but narrowed it down to the one mentioned here and the funky blue/orange Samsung. The keyboard layout of the NC10 swung it for me and i'm reasonably impressed with it.

I like my ASUS Eee a lot, my only complaint is that the Atom processor is a bit slow, but for the price it is great. I get excellent battery life, and it works very nicely with Skype- built in camera and mike.

    Asus eee PC1000

I bought the 1000 after extensive research on the net. But I made sure it had (a) 2Gb of RAM in it, and I replaced the HD with a 64Gb Runcore SSD.

It's my travelling machine. 7 hours of battery life covers me for most flights when I've seen all the stuff on the In Flight entertainment system.

I've put Windows 7 ultimate on it, and although like all Windows it takes bloody ages to load, once it's loaded it's just fine - vast improvement on Vista and better than XP in my book.

I dual boot it with Ubuntu Netbook Remix, which loads quicker and is fine for just browsing the net and email/messenger.

I think it cost me $600 in total about a year ago, but it's probably cheaper now. The 12 cell battery if you want long battery life while watching video is a *must* (as is the SSD drive which, while smaller capacity than a 2.5" hard disk, uses a lot less power). But Windows 7 is like Vista, anything less than 2Gb of RAM and the bloody disk light is on all the time.

    Cheers,
    Harry

Be wary of netbooks. The screens aren't big enough to use some features.

When I try using wifi, the 'çonnect' button is below the screen & you can't scroll down.

Bought a Acer Aspire One 160gb Hd 1gb ram, battery about 5.5 hrs. 10.1" screen. £250 in the Uk. Running XP home. works well once loaded. A very nice piece of kit. Much easier to lug on the plane

I have bought the acer aspire one pro with 160gb hard drive, it's a great little computer.
Bought it in china about 2 months ago for 2500RMB which I think translates to about 12,000 baht, absolute bargain!!

^^ I found good prices there at that MBK area. Up on the second floor right next to the BTS station. All the brands were well represented.
I'm still thinking on that Samsung ND-10 linux based one. Seems hard to go wrong for 10000 baht.

Thats a good price. I've promised my wife one for christmas. My mate has the Samsung, he bought it from England. Great little piece of kit and it still worked after I knocked a whole pint of beer over it.

Yes, they are great, mine is a Medion, much more portable than a laptop, wireless built in. Great for streaming movies and as a music player

Have you tried setting the screen resolution to 1024x600 like it's supposed to be?

If you can't, then you need a new video driver. Find out your video card manufacturer using "unknown device identifier" and download the latest one. it may also be on the Netbook manufacturer's website.

Yes they have a smaller screen, but that's why they're called Netbooks or "ultra-mobiles". That's the whole bloody point!

    Cheers,
    Harry
