    Ubuntu.....Glitches and Fixes.

I have come across a few problems with ubuntu of late.

think i'll document them here as well as what i did to fix them.

Last week, i bought an external hard drive in NTFS format.

Before i even got it home, ike a pillock i plugged it in at work, but didn't shut it down tidily.

when i got home, i was unable to mount the drive on my ubuntu machine owing to an internal log file error.
fortunately, some geek has created a programme to resolve the issue.

In order to clear the log in ubuntu and get the thing mounted, you need to open a terminal and enter.

    sudo apt-get install ntfsprogs

    - ok That will get the program ntfs fix that you need the next command will tell it to fix your drive, make sure your drive is plugged in at this point:

    sudo ntfsfix /dev/sdb1

the sdb1 thingy is the device causing you problems.

.In order to find out what the device is designated as, plug in the device, wait for the error to pop up and then look at the error details. It should tell you /dev/sdb1 or /dev/sdb2 , mine turned out to
    be sdc1.

change the number if necessary, press enter and presto, the bastard mounts.

Another problem I had was that my NTFS drives needed to be mounted manually, which is a bit of a pain in the arse.

In order to mount your drives automatically.

    Open a terminal.

    type in or paste.

    sudo aptitude update

    enter.

    then.

    sudo aptitude install ntfs-config

This will install an NTFS configuration tool under system tools in your main gnome menu.

just click on it and it will choose the drives you want automated.

that will auto mouns your NTFS drives.

trial and error is the only way forward,

I get sick of asking for help when most often the answer is already out there.

just changed few pc to Ubuntu, no more MS...

There are quite a few issues in beginning, constant download of softs for adapting system to watch video, to find a PDF converter,to get a toolbar,...there are issues with all the open softs, such as thunderbird and mozilla, as we made a full open source jump... but all in all Ubuntu makes it quite easy with the add or delete soft...

the main problem i have actually using Open softs, there i mean Open Office, is with excell sheets !
print something and something else comes out, another spreadsheet, not the one on screen, Save a file and some numbers return to old numbers...Well it is annouced that you should save in open office format, as excell format migth not be able doing all formulas... Should be a way around this, but for the mo it is double check all files before print or send...

Cm i see you are using Opera as browser, i use Firefox. Some web pages just remove all of the toolbars, i cannot find any way to close that website afterward, luckily enough the system provides 2 screens, so i have to go to the other screen and shut down system reboot and exclude the browsed website to be clear of it...

Do you have that on opera as well ?

actually, i got that problem too. After opening firefox, my panel is gone and firefox takes over the whole screen. Twice push F11 and I have it back. Dunno how to change this default behaviour...

Then, the other thing with Ubuntu, with use of gnome, is, I would like to change the panel to the side because my laptop has a wide screen. Unfortunately, the text goes vertical as well.... as far as searching on the web for this, the solution is to switch to another panel like lxpanel....

    F11 then !

Ubuntu seems to remind or announce as soon there are updates available. Was the case 2 days ago... Should those just be taken as they appear ? It says it fixes this and that, but is it fully tested at release, can we trust those guys working for free out there ? Did you accepted all of the last updates as well ?

I 've also had the titlebars missing with Mandriva, and after a search in their forum it seems that the problem is related to Compiz.

Just use Windows. You don't get any problems with Windows at all.
