Providing a hard drive, and i'm refering to a high end unit as i'm not familiar with PCs, can transfer information bit for bit with no loss, then theoretically it could be better than a dedicated transport.

Teac were, and still are famous for making the VRDS clamping system, which was designed to reduce vibration through the spinning disc. The hard drive units i heard and sold were as good as my dedicated unit. The plus side with the hard drive was the cataloguing system and instance access. I would never spend what the amount i did on a Audiophile system again.

But likewise you can spent 10k easily on a high end hard drive unit.

I fail to see the relevance

the original analog sound is converted to a binary number via the ADC ( resistor voltage divider flipping digital registers to a clock pulse and shuffled to storage ) , so you have a shedload of binary numbers representing the original analog sound.

send that binary by what ever method you wish ( truckload of punch cards ? )

take the binary and use DAC device to convert back to analog signal and drive linear motors via filters to move air around

disclaimer - I have been happy listening to music via a mono transistor radio - it just depends where you are and what resources are on hand.
If you torture data for enough time , you can get it to say what you want.
