Don't worry if you don't know how to do it, KW.Quote:

Not right now, Noony. Couldn't get it looking right. It all looked squashed up, and changing the fonts as per Nick's instructions didn't help much. Also, I've got games and stuff installed under XP.
Might have another go some time, but my XP is running nicely at the moment and some smartarse (ie Frankie) is bound to offer some sage advice like if it ain't broke...
is there any good reason to change it form that?Quote:

Nick, or anyone else that uses ubuntu.
do you always install all the updates?
i updated yesterday and there are another 68 that have become available overnight.
i have no idea what about 80% of them do.
^Sometimes, sometimes not. Maybe update once a week.
Sure you didn't boot XP by mistake?Quote:

But I think you shall install them, someone more knowledgeable than you and me thinks it is good for you.
Your alternative is to search for them when you need them.
Waste of time in my opinion when you can get them automatically.
I've just looked at the updates. The main thing it's updating is the linux kernel (2.6.24-18 to 2.6.24-19), which I think is quite important, but you'd have to ask FF exactly why. I don't think there's any rush to do it, but there's also no reason not to.
anyway, not sure if I mentioned it before, but Ubuntu is for fags and one of the worst distro out there, full of bugs etc... which could explain the 60MB download update everyday,
Anyone who want to see what a GUI and friendly distro should look like, should try the Knoppix Live CD,
it boots in less than 15 sec, and it has everything you need, probably the best distro I have ever seen,
anyway, I think the public at large should stick to Windows, not Linux, they are not qualified to use such a platform,
i don't know anything about other linux distros, but the above post has just confirmed that I'm probably using the right one:rofl:
^ you are a fag, NickA, like CMN, so you are excused and can use ubuntu :)
When you get distros that are always jumping onthe latest & greatest bangdwagon as far as kernels & systems software go they might implement before they should. One reason I like Slackware (the last major distro to include a 2.6.xx kernel).
I've gotten to where I don;t think much of most Linux distros out there simply because they are trying to be more and more windows like in their installs and maintenance routines. While Ubuntu has made it's name on being a great beginners package I think they are probably more guilty than otehr distro development groups of this sin.
Once you've installed these self-healing distros they will donwload all kinds of minor upgrades. These upgrade will then trigger other upgrades and so on. Jesus christ, if it ain't ready then don't put it out there. If your machine works and it's not a server I see no reason for 90% of the upgrades they want to force down your throat unless you are running the bleeding edge CVS versions of GNU apps. Shut the the fuckin thing down
It's a necessity for them to be user friendly if they should have any chance of competing with Windows.Quote:

^ yeah I know. I don;t mind them putting in the graphic install routines as long as you are able to circumvent them. But when packaging a distro most packagers are adding in the latest & greatest, one step out of CVS software that is almost never right.
If you are a developer you may have need for the latest libs or you may need to have a copy of the edgiest kernel for testing and dev work. they are out there and developers should know how to configure their system for them. But for converted windows users? this is simply the one page out of the Microsoft book they should have skipped. Building stable systems doesn't seem to be as important any more. There are very stable platforms out there running the kernel version from a year ago.
Ubuntu is as far as I am concerned a great system to "get yer feet wet" There are much better distros out there for long term use.
I don't think Ubuntu could get a better recommendation that BF thinking it's crap. I'll DL a copy right away.Quote:

i am ready to vaporise all trace of windows from my system just as soon as I've backed everything up.
probably need a new external hard drive.
^You should probably listen to me more often:)

i paid no attention to you whatsoever.
it was actually junior expat that persuaded me to give it a go when i met him down the pub.

I can post on teakdoor whilst watching my griffin fly to netherstorm :)
I've been using Ubuntu since Oct. last year. I update every time it prompts me to and I have no idea what they are. So far I've had no problems whatsoever. My only complaint is that Ubuntu doesn't detect the memory card reader on my laptop.Quote:

^vlc, movieplayer, mplayer, kmplayer, kaffeine, codeine.
I've got loads of them installed, but vlc will do everything you want, kaffeine is good and mplayer is good if you want to control with keyboard or joystick.
yes, vlc plays just about anything and everything.
i like that k3B dvd burning thing.
much sharper and easier to use than nero.
vlc works perfect. Now I can watch the last 3 episodes of BSG I downloaded.
Thanks guys!
