    Here's some Google News...

Google fined €4.3bn over Android stranglehold

    Bruno Waterfield, Simon Duke
    July 18 2018, 12:00pm, The Times

The European Commission will fine Google a record €4.3 billion over its Android operating system in a decision that will further poison transatlantic relations as a trade war looms.

    Margrethe Vestager
, the European Union’s competition regulator, will announce the fine after an investigation into Google’s contracts with smartphone manufacturers and telecoms operators.

Last year Google was fined €2.4 billion fine by the commission following an investigation into its shopping-search service.
The latest fine is expected to come with sweeping requirements for “remedies” allowing telephone manufacturers or telecom providers to choose non-Google apps to install on the estimated 80 per cent of devices that run on Android software.

EU measures are also expected to target payments by the US internet giant to telecoms operators and manufacturers who exclusively install Google search.

According to the European Commission, Google has a market share of more than 90 per cent for internet search, licensed mobile operating systems and app stores for Android software.

The fine will stoke tensions between Washington and Brussels, already running high after President Trump imposed tariffs on a range of European goods.

Mrs Vestager had been expected to impose the multi-billion-euro penalty last Wednesday but the timing would have clashed with Mr Trump’s trip to Europe.

The decision will sour talks between Jean-Claude Juncker, the commission’s president, and President Trump next week aimed at averting a looming transatlantic trade war and new US tariffs on car imports.

Mrs Vestager is best known in America for ordering Ireland to claw back €13 billion in back taxes from Apple in 2016 after breaking state aid rules.

At a recent G7 meeting in Canada, marred by clashes over trade, Mr Trump told Mr Juncker: “Your tax lady, she really hates the US.”
The commission launched its probe into Android three years ago, focusing on the terms that smartphone makers such as Samsung must accept if they build their devices around the Android operating system.

In its 2016 charge sheet, the commission said that the conditions were anticompetitive.

Smartphone makers that use Android are obliged to place the Google search at the centre of the home screen. They must also display the Google Play app store and Chrome browser prominently.

Mrs Vestager argued that these conditions “stood in the way of innovation by other players”.

Google has denied that it throttles nascent competitors. It said that the commission’s case was flawed because it did not include Apple’s operating system in its calculations.

Google has vowed to fight any fine in court. Experts, however, said that the internet search giant might have to stomach interim “remedies” while its challenge goes through the courts. These could include removing the obligation to display its search bar on smartphone screens, which would hurt Google’s advertising business.

According to analysts, any change in the current contracts could hit Google hard because much of its recent growth has come from mobile search.

Over the longer term, the data that Google gleans from smartphones could give it a crucial advantage over rivals in new high-growth areas, such as artificial intelligence.

The Silicon Valley giant launched the Android platform in 2007 as an open source development kit for smartphone makers. It is now used in more than one billion devices, collecting vast amounts of personal data as fuel for Google’s online ad machine.

Google News app bug is using up gigabytes of background data without users’ knowledge

Some users of Google News for Android are reporting that the app has used up excessive amounts of background data, leading to overage charges. According to dozens of posts on the Google News Help Forum, users have been experiencing this issue as early as June. The issue was verified and addressed by a Google News community manager in September, stating that the company was investigating and working toward a fix, but the issue is still ongoing.
