I upgraded to 3BB 200/50 Mbps Fiber Package for 1200/Month - "Slow" Wifi Speed?

I originally had 3BB 50/10 "Fiber" line, and after Pragmatics thread:

https://teakdoor.com/computer-news/17...c-upgrade.html (TOT free fiber optic upgrade.)

It inspired me to upgrade so, fuck it, I'm gonna upgrade. 1200/Month aint that bad considering I was paying like 500/month already.

They just installed everything yesterday evening, so haven't had much time to really test it yet. Will get around to it later today, but for now, Im getting "slow" wifi speeds, but fast LAN connection speeds.

When I Connect my Mac via LAN cable from the Fiber Modem they installed:

I get this speed, bang on every time, on the Mac, no VPN or nothing, just a one-click speedtest direct LAN connection:

And My PS4 is connected by LAN cable and I get this speed:

But on Wifi, I get these kinds of speeds:

So took the LAN cable that was giving my Mac the proper 200 Mbps speed, and rigged it up to this Asus router I had & configured it as an access point:

And I get the same kind of speeds as above. 50, 60, 70, 80 Mbps speeds.

Now, both the 3BB router, and the Asus router are 2.4 Ghz band routers, and both are on "Channel 11".

Both the install techs, and 3BB call center people said that to get the full speed over Wifi, I need to buy an Access Point with either Dual Band 2.4/5 Ghz and run it with 5Ghz wifi, or a straight 5Ghz "High Quality" AP.

Their argument was interference on the 2.4 Ghz band slowing my wifi speeds down.

That 2.4 Ghz Asus router was rigged up to a 300 Mbps Fiber line in the states, and was putting out 300 Mbps over Wifi. Hooked up here, its not.

I want the full speed over Wifi, and the LAN cable puts it out 100% but I don't want to waste the cash on a new Router/AP (5,000 baht or more, want to DDWRT for VPN) if its all horseshit from 3BB.

    Thoughts?

Does it should like a 5Ghz AP would solve my problem?

    No it wasn't.
RT-N12HP can do 2 wide channel wifi streams which equals a throughput of 300Mbps but that is something it can only achieve if it is constantly transmitting with no receiving and not a microsecond of pause in the transmission.
The normal use case gives you a throughput which is around half of that max.

bw, Apple does not allow for wide channel on 2.4GHz so your Huawei and Asus will operate in 150Mbps mode and you will get around half of that.

Anyway, regardless, what solution do you recommend?

change the server on your speedtest to KL, let us know what speed you get there.

im on the 130meg package but it drops to 30 meg through ethernet when you try internationallly

Which exact server? I tried the first 3 for KL using speedtest.net with the ethernet cable hooked up. No VPN or anything, just a server change.

    U Mobile:

    Maxis:

    Yes 4G:

If you give me a specific server, Ill test it.

a primer on wifi and why your advertised speed is marketing fluff

    https://arstechnica.com/information-...kind-of-sucks/

is there a newer firmware from asus for your AP ?
have you looked for congestion from neighbours on the channel you are using ?

what type of wifi does your idevice have ?
If you torture data for enough time , you can get it to say what you want.

So you already know everything, why do you then ask for advice?

Solved the slow wifi speed by buying this router, from this seller on Lazada:

    https://www.lazada.co.th/asus-rt-ac6...er-326230.html

Connected to the Huawei modem/router supplied by 3BB and running it right out of the box in AP Mode (Access Point) in the 5GHz band and I get the full speed.

Apparently the Wifi on the unit supplied by 3BB is a turd.

Did some speed testing through the new router and different VPN Server Locations using ExpressVPN (paid subscription). This time of day, on a Monday, probably isn't the most accurate time to test (also a consideration) as the speeds in the evening are extremely fast compared to the speeds at this time of day. Still, even the lowest speeds at the worst testing times are better then most.

VPN off, straight-up one click test:

USA Los Angeles - 3 This is the Server Location that unblocks US Netflix. Express VPN change it whenever Netflix gets wise and blocks it.

Painful, but everything still works. Youtube, everything. I get netflix in Ultra HD no problem and regardless of the low numbers, its still as fast as my 50/10 connection before the upgrade. So very much worth it.

Another test, much faster with LA - 3

    Singapore - Jurong:

all these speed test doesn't matter,

once you go http on port 80, like browsing, which I suspect the test do not do, then all traffic go through the very busy overloaded Thai government proxy server and slow you down to 1MB internet connection

for Bittorrent, which is not on port 80, the download speed will be a bit better, but I suspect it's also under government "proxy" routing

I know its misleading because of the international gateway, but I don't think they have the "Government Proxy" thing going. If you are referring to the Single gateway thing they were talking about similar to the Chinese, I don't think thats been implemented. Yet.

And its a Fuckload faster by every measurable metric compared to my 50/10 line I had before it.

Ill do a download test through my torrent client.

for the test or the actual browsing ?

for the test, I suspect no government proxy

for browsing, the government proxy has been in force since 2005, so it's there at every Thai ISP data centers.

The new "version" of the government proxy was to be "directly managed" by Thai government instead of being "ISP managed"

I would assume that because I was testing outside Thailand that it would go through whatever gateway/proxy they have going and the test would be inclusive, but not definitive.

with torrents and their random ports, it's harder for ISP to monitor traffic or put it through the government proxy

    25mb/s is nice,

here in Europe, it's 100mb/s on a slow "standard" connection
