I use mine with pirated books from KAT & Pirate Bay etc... with a program called "Calibre"

Upload books & convert. Then sync library to kindle. Use Calibre for editing my library and keeping organized. All books not just Amazon ones. So in that respect it's not just amazon it's piss easy to sync any books.

It might be designed that way, the same way the FireStick is designed to be locked as well.

But you of all people should know that is no obstacle.

Paperwhite is the dogs bollocks for reading.

My normal travelling devices are the paperwhite, Yoga Tab 3 for video/TV and Lenovo laptop (which I only carry for work). All of them fit comfortably in hand luggage.

I'm curious to hear your opinion re: what those "better options" are?

I did not do a lot of research, this was a small dollar thing. The little I did, though, did not reveal other choices that were anything more than about the same (for example, the Google 8GB tablet - which was in fact a bit more pricey).

Price Range on par with your 7" Fire:

Scroll to the bottom and you can compare it to your 7" Fire - its a bit better and has Android OS.

Thanks Slick. FYI, here's the Fire I bought, which I got even a bit cheaper at another retailer, versus the amazon website price (ten dollars better). Of course, its just 8 GB versus the 16GB of those contained in your links, possibly some other differences also, so naturally it was cheaper than what you have in your links. I've installed a micro SD card (a 16GB one I had one laying around ... and the Fire can handle a much larger card), so storage will not be an issue.

^ The main thing is access to android OS and Google Play Store - Games, Apps, Launcher Changes, Accessibility etc..

But yeah for $40 its not a loss

worked great until I cracked the Non-Gorrila glass screen......

but it was $35 on black friday so not a big deal

Still running well. Still happy with it. I know, no one likes to hear that here, as Teakdoor is the land of complaining.

There are ways of getting books which do not involve Kindle store or any other store. Calibre and PB are your friends.
