    Flash bios

So the dell is not recognising the hard drive.

Bios is out of date i think. I believe i can get the update onto a 1gig flash drive, but the download is self extracting so how do i save to usb and prevent it extracting straight away onto the flash drive?

Status after boot is "No operating system found" and when i enter system f2 on boot is says mSata none.

So if sata hdd is not broken, this is a bios thing, right?

    no - very unlikely

please tell us the exact error message - OS not found ?

when you boot ( press the on button ) , you should be able to press f2 ( dells ) and enter the bios

in the bios with the arrow keys and the enter and escape buttons you can navigate around - when you finish , exit without saving

in the bios it will tell you if it sees the hard drive
If you torture data for enough time , you can get it to say what you want.

Is the disk making any unusual noises? Crackling, splintering, etc.?

    Right

so turn on, consistent beep beep beep

initially it was going through the Dell motions and stopping at "Operating System not found"

If I enter Bios diagnostics, if is not showing hard drive (no sounds or rattling and never has been). The CPU Fan was pinging saying not working but then it started again. Also Video graphics card is showing as not functioning, and on the "thorough" test it is completing to 98% and then flagging up the Fault. Ther are some residual issues with the fucker, but none that should be causing this problem.

Dell Bios Error code is 2000-0332 by the way. When I search that it says Flash Bios with update. The Bios is out of date compared to the one that it says I can down load today for it.

    forget updating the bios

google youtube replace fan on dell <insert model number here>

take the screwdrive you use to fix your glasses and pull it to bits and remove the dead baby mouse which has its cock stuck in the fan - at the same time you may find the detrius of a 2010 pizza and varios hardend spots of dead white tadpoles - clean that sh1t out too

you could first purchase a tube of thermal paste - good stuff not chinese cheapo - thermaltake or artic silver etc - and remove the heatsink on the CPU and the GPU , clean off the old cum and spurt a rice grain of new stuff

this stuff is simples if you follow the video(s)

we will get to replacing the hard drive with a 500g evo 850 SSD later

    It's such 1 - 1 - 1 - 1 - 1 - 1 - 1 - 1 - 1

Still getting it. Have reseated the video card already.

Am going to reflahs the bios first, and if that fail, will be doing my usual next course of action - loading the laptop into a sling, chucking it in the air and shooting the fecker,

I just do not know why it is not recognising that there is a HDD, and yet the HDD is working fine.

er - you need it to complete post and boot at least from a USB stick to even start to think about flashing the BIOS

did you pop out the RAM and then reseat it ?

though now I know it is a desktop , looking below it does not look good - bios rom corruption - unless you are able to de solder the eeeprom and plug it into an eeeprom programmer ( a usb one is about 40 dollars on amazon ) and upload a correct bios and then re solder it to your mobo you are sh1t out of luck

    Dell beep codes

    Beep Code Description
1 beep BIOS ROM corruption or failure
2 beeps Memory (RAM) not detected
    3 beeps Motherboard failure
    4 beeps Memory (RAM) failure
    5 beeps CMOS Battery failure
    6 beeps Video card failure
    7 beeps Bad processor (CPU)

Ram is all fine. It is a Laptop by the way.

I have made the bootable USB and downloaded the bios update to that.

Put in the file name and it sayd "this program cannot be run in DOS mode

Well thats shit it up then I imagine if I can not even run the bloody bios update

No there will be a bios flash program which you will need to have on the stick

run that and then choose the bios image you want to flash

I supposed it was.a.desktop as you said you reseated the video card. In a laptop the video chip is soldered to the mobo

    Right - so thats done.

On the good side, everything in pre boot assessment is showing a nice happy green tick including the video card..... except the HDD which has an scowling N/A next to is.

This is not mine, but the same. On the left where it says HARD DRIVE, instead of a green tick there is a grey circle and N\A in it.

everything else is fine. I have swapped RAM and that worked. The reason I did that is because it is a Pheonix BIOS and there is no beep code at all for 1 1 1 1 1 1 1 1 and everywhere I have searched it says that there no beep code for that, and usually swapping RAM will help. But it didn't.

So now I am admitting defeat and will be jumping onto the Which Laptop thread to re-assess which one I should go for next.

I can access the HDD from another computer but can not test it to see if it can boot from it, and I have no other HDD I can plug in to test.

^ ok , you see this then you likely have a corrupted Master Boot Record

easiest thing to do it so re install the OS - if as you say you can access the drive from another machine - copy off what needs to be saved and then re install

what is the model of the machine ? cpu , ram ? as I said maybe a samsung 500gig 850 evo will breath new life into it - putting a SSD into a laptop of 3 or 4 year old makes a big difference

when I boot from USB it says

    Loading DRMK version 8

    Bad or missing file \himem.sys

    Bad or missing file \ramdrive.sys

never new I had a hymen sys.
    /
    does that give a clue?
