Any ideas why my new phone won't connect to wifi?

It's a Sony experia model E5563. Not a new release, released last year I think but I figured it's not that old.
    Running android 5.1.
It's a bit of a pig actually and I'm beginning to regret it. Just seems slow and sluggish.

The big pain in the arse is that it won't connect to the wifi.
it recognises the router and asks for the password but I keep getting an 'authentication problem' notice.
I'm definitely entering the correct password, and my old phone, laptop and wifes phone all connect no problem.
Any ideas as to what the problem might be?

I'm pretty sure I've had this problem with a Sony; it's a matter of calling up the call centre or going to the shop and getting them to change some settings to be compatible with your wifi network. I know it sounds strange, but if my memory serves me right it was an issue between the phone settings and the network (as in phone network, 3G/4G, etc, not the wifi network).

how many DHCP leases have you allowed ? and what time limit ?

common in many public wifi access points is they will have 50 DHCP leases as the default and they will have 24 hour to 7 day leases on the ip ( MAC addresses are used to determine the device ) - so once 50 devices have connected the router will not cancel the old leases until the time out that is set ( usually in seconds )
If you torture data for enough time , you can get it to say what you want.

Why do people buy this shit. Hard to root, no-one develops for them.

Anyway, first off go to Settings, scroll to the bottom, About, and see if there are any updates. If there are it will save you doing a factory reset, and you'll want to upgrade anyway.

Or maybe it shipped with a bug that they've fixed.

    Added:

    Latest available software

You may already have the latest software, depending on the date of purchase. Software updates are released at different times depending on operator and/or country. Therefore, we cannot give you an exact date for when a specific update will be available for your device.

    Android version: Android 5.1 (Lollipop)

    Latest available software: 29.1.A.0.101

    Release started: 2016-04-08

Well just assumed he was talking about his router at home....

"it won't connect to the wifi.

So if this the case, restart the fucker, and usually it will work.

Sell the phone or chuck it (airplane mode) and get one that connects to your router without problems. May cost but you know it will better for your health....

Actually pseudopuss has had a rare moment of clarity.

Update the router firmware as well.

Cujo, I had a similar thing recently. This is what worked for me.

Settings > More Networks > Mobile Networks > Network Mode

Check the Network Mode for the SIM you want to use to connect to the internet (i.e., Network mode SIM 1 or Network mode SIM 2)

On my phone there are 3 choices.

    • WCDMA/GSM (auto connect)
    • WCDMA only
    • GSM only

Select WCDMA/GSM (auto connect) for your internet SIM. (If your phone only allows one SIM at 3G, you'll have to set the other SIM to GSM only).

Like I said, it worked for me. Worth you trying to see if it's the same issue.

I've only got one sim and anyway I'm trying to connect via wifi, not the network.

I'll try updating the software but how does one update the router?

depends what exactly it is , but assuming it has been handing out 192.168.1.x IP addresses via DHCP , put 192.168.1.1 in the address bar of your browser and when you get the login page use admin as the user and admin as the pwd - then you will find a tab/link called administration and in it will be options like update firmware with a button to allow you to browse to where you have saved the file you downloaded from the manufaturers website

Ok, I checked the software, it's up to date. Going to have to take it to starbucks and see if it connects to wifi there.
if not it looks like a hardware problem. I'll take it back to the store. Problem is that's in Macau.

Thanks. Admin doesn't work as password there. I'll have to dig out my password from somewhere.

Login to your router and check the wireless security settings, they should be WPA2 Personal with AES as algorithm.

Do not use WEP as security mode (it is discontinued and not supported by new devices) and do not use TKIP as algorithm, not even in combination with AES.

My old sony experia had exactly the same problem. Could connect to other wifi, but not my home network. Seem to recall that this was a notorious problem for Sony phones (endless searching on the web).

Now, the bad news is, my missus was able to fix it - but buggered if I can recall how. She set it as a preferred network somehow, problem solved.

My newest model Sony does not seem to have this problem, but I really don't use the wifi much as I use the data transmission plan, and do not seem to go over the limits for that.
