    Computer overhaul by rank amateur.

I'm going to do it. I've been speaking of it for some time, but this time it's happening. I'm going to overhaul my comp. It is an HP Pavillion.
First thing I'm going to do is make a copy of the data. I've seen a WD My Passport 1TB external drive for sale at Banana IT for 2,260 baht. Is this a good buy or not?
Next I want to add 2GB of RAM to the comp. I've watched a few YouTube vids on how to do this and it doesn't look too difficult. Where should I buy the RAM?
Next I want to take off Windows XP and replace it with Windows 7. Where should I buy the program disc?
Shops in Pattaya or Rayong would be most convenient.
    Any help appreciated.

Unusual for me to agree with david44 (when I understand him) but on this occassion he is right. Find your local IT mall, give it to a Thai geek to do it. You will pay peanuts, but generally get a good job.....

..although I would probably cover my bets by getting the external drive and saving important shit first....I mean, goat porn is not that easy to come by....

Well, what a pleasant surprise! The reason I was going to try doing it myself was that I thought a hired geek might balls it up.
We had some repairs/adjustments done to previous computers by a woman in Star Computers, Rayong. She always did a perfect job, but has now moved on. We tried asking around in SC to see if anybody else would take on the present job, but were met with the Thai sneer and shifty personalities.
But, if you think I might find a geek to do the job well, I shall have another look around. If anybody knows of said geek who may want to take on the job and do it well, please let me know.
    Thanks for your replies.

buy the 1TB drive and make a copy of your data before you do anything else - anything - backing up data means you have at least 2 copies of the data in different physical locations

and "your data" means files that you have created

photos and documents and maybe home movies

the music and movies that you have downloaded you will be able to download again
If you torture data for enough time , you can get it to say what you want.

Yup. This is true whether OP decides to go for it himself, or find a geek.

    That raised a smile.
Data backed up onto two external drives.
I've been to Wattana computer shop on Pattaya Klang and they told me they could supply and fit the Ram and install W7 for around 2,000 baht inclusive. (Can't remember the exact quote).
That'll do. I'll take the comp there at the first opportunity.
    Thanks for the replies.

Find out how much the RAM is. They shouldn't get more than 200-300 thb over the price of parts. When you get it back you should also get the box for the new RAM with receipt and the old RAM stick.

What version of MS would you suggest one upgrades to from XP? The OP wants to go from XP to Windows 7.0...? I thought we were at Windows 10.0 now?

Windows 10 is gooooooooood (as long as you like lots of updates...). Get win7 then upgrade to win10 when it comes next year.

it is still in beta - no full release yet

and it is not a good idea to grab the brand new OS from windows as it historically has needed a while to iron out the fcukups

Not true in this case. I've been using it since day one and not a Blue Screen or anything else to be seen. And it seems to do everything 8.1 did only better.

But it does have a keystroke logger and stuff so if you value your privacy better to wait.

It's beta, but a good beta - I've had very few problems; Chrome crashes from time to time, Skype has rebooted a couple of times. A couple of long updates too.

But, it is a nice OS, similar to win7, but with the benefits of win8 and hindsight...

Should be released in 6 months(?) or so, and should be liked by most, I'd have thought.
    Cycling should be banned!!!

My XP's working fine, but it is dated and think I'll do an up-grade in June or so.

True that, but it also doesn't help that MS has abandoned their responsibility for support of MS. I think that in itself has the makings of a great "class action suit."

I paid good money for a legal XP software and now MS who authored it, sold it and supported it, now disavows anything to do with it.

    Typical Silicone Valley attitude.
