Low disc space on Vista lap top?

Talk about getting ones money's worth.

I've got a advent vista lap top bought in 2007 that keeps on going.

However, recently this Low Disc Space malarky keeps popping up and slowing it down.

I keep clearing all unnecessary files etc.

Any tips on how to get more life out of the old dog?

By unnecessary you mean temporary? Have you emptied the recycle bin?

I'm sure someone who actually knows something will be along in a minute.

Have you tried defragmenting the disk?

The disc might have enuff space , but one of the partitions might need more room ?

put Disk Management into the start search box
and select Create and format option
to see how it looks .

if you need to allocate one partition , more space something like
    EaseUS Partition Master Free
EaseUS Partition Master Free Edition - Free download and software reviews - CNET Download.com

or maybe just buy a new drive a cheap SSD one is best , though they are all a bit of a pain transferring the data to .

Open explorer and search for *.*

    Then sort by size.

I bet you'll find all sorts of crap you'd forgotten about.

And if you have loads of memory, shrink the page file.

And download Advanced System Care (free). It's great. Never had a hiccup from using it.

If it has been running Vista for 7 years it is probably suffering from an advanced case of bitrot.

If possible back up all the docs, videos, pics and stuff you want to keep and then either re-install Vista (not recommended) or install a newer operating system to clean everything up.

oh, if you want a registry fix instead ....

This might not fix the root of the problem, if there is one , but it will stop the pestering popups ballooning up .

How to disable the low disk space warning messages

When a hard drive partition is low on free space, you receive a pop-out balloon warning in the System Tray (Systray) alerting you that your computer is running low, or is out of, disk space, as the thresholds are approached. By default these thresholds are 200MB, 80MB, and 50MB respectively. See the following KB article for more information:

To disable these balloon messages follow the steps below:

    1. Open the Registry Editor by clicking on Start -> Run and running REGEDIT.

    2. Navigate to the following location:

    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\ Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer

    3. Right-click in the blank area of the right-hand pane of the Registry Editor and create a new DWORD Value by selecting New -> DWORD Value.

    4. Name this new DWORD Value NoLowDiscSpaceChecks

    5. Double-click on the new DWORD value and assign it a value of 1.

    6. Close the Registry Editor and restart the computer.

    Thanks for all the replies.

    I had the same problem.
It was solved when someone walked into my house and stole the laptop.

you never mentioned that before -

you could try these 2 ideas to save space

    http://www.partition-tool.com/resour...disk-space.htm

Remove all but the most recent system restore point

Disable Hibernation and delete Hiberfil.sys if the space problem is critical on your system partition. It's a hidden file on the root directory of your system drive. Open Control Panel. Type Hibernate in the search bar. Select turn Hibernate On / Off.
    on that second one .
I cannot remember if i did it like that , but somehow I removed the hibernation option and freed a massive 9 Gb.
What you need Hibernate for anyway? Sleep is good enuff.
