Thank you for listening:
1. I need just a bit of advice or opinion about a network related computer problem.
2. I know there is someone on Teak Door who is probably smarter than half of the people in Thailand about the IT field of networks.
3. MY SITUATION:
a. Here is a small hotel/service apartment with up to 200 people living in 4 buildings very close together.
b. All rooms have cable TV.
c. Rooms are not "high rent" but modest in price, NOT cheap.
d. During the past months, two separate companies have installed wireless systems to provide internet connectivity, both to the rooms and outside in the commons, a small courtyard.
e. The problem is that the internet runs like crappola, only worse. It is bad, sometimes slow speed, but it also cuts off, and looses connection either for 3 hours at a time, or sometimes it will just shut down for 3 minutes and then come back up again.
f. I think the server is a linux based system with two separate boxes. The IT people do not know linux and so need to contract with a provider to maintain the server and set it up, or modify it. Service is PURE GARBAGE.
g. Here are the questions:
11 Is it really necessary from a service or connection quality point of view to even have a server? Why not just throw out the servers and the maintenance company, and then just hire someone to connect the isp provided connects directly to the network inside the condo apt complex?
22. Or, what is the best way to substitute a much easier system which can do the same thing as the servers? which will not require advance IT tweaking or rebuilding of the server?
33. I will be happy to provide more details, but I don't know what info to provide. Basically it is just 150 rooms with about 200 to 250 computers all connected to the network by wireless access points.
44. The OTHER THING I had wondered: Why not just use the existing cable wires which go to all the room TV Sets? Couldn't these be used to send internet signal directly to the rooms?
----
I am not asking for this info like I am asking for FREE ADVICE when I should be paying for it. This network is not MY network, and I just want to try to understand what these people are doing wrong that seems to have the whole network completely Fd up!
It might be a good thought experiment for you.
I also bet that there are many other apt complexes who are being sold much more networking hardware and software than they actually need.
TKS!
